A guy I knew and a friend of his did a parody of that song. Theirs was called "Dueling Voices". I heard a tape recording of them singing it. One sang, "Da-da-do do-do-do-do-do-do..." and the other would sing "Da-da-don't don't-don't-don't-don't-don't-don't..." It was really funny!

Apparently you've never played at "Vito's Knuckle Room" in New Jersey. Very tough joint. On the menu they have "broken leg of lamb".....worked the piano lounge there at one time..very tough joint.

Just last night I went to a new place in the events listing, and discovered I was the only person of my particular color. I was initially taken aback, but the bartender/owner went out of his way to welcome me. I still wanted to leave, but I stayed because he was so nice.
I sang one song, one I had never performed before, and got the biggest round of applause! Perhaps just for my chutzpah, but it was nice. I would have stayed for another except that things were moving slow enough that it was going to be very late. All in all, I had a very good time and people were very nice and welcoming. (Not to mention dynamite singers!)
Sometimes we have initial reactions, and if we brave that initial wave things change a bit.

kurt, just out of curiousity, what was your reason for being there? were you trying to get new gigs, hanging out with friends? those answers may have something to do with the feeling you got. i've been places where things just didn't feel right as well, but alot of times it was due to the reason i was there.

Actually the evenings in question I was delivering Karaoke magazines that I had done a feature story on the bar, the KJ and thier big karaoke competition that they had at the county fair.
(In KS Magazine. In fact, Ive done storys there on them in 3 separate magazines)
The feature KJ and owner of the place were not there that night and the alternate KJ was. I got the distinct impression that he wasnt happy that HE wasnt the featured KJ in the story. The main KJ was the featured person along with the bar owner. So when I talked to him there was a very distinct uncomfortable coldish vibe. Plus some side long dirty looks I got from him kinda put me on alert.
Couple that with one of the regular persons(female) that apparently didnt understand that I was there doing a magazine article, coming up to me and giving me the third degree about shooting so many pics implying that I was there perving with my cam...........well that was really annoying and quite uncalled for I thought.
(KJ and bar owner were provided a cd disc of all the pics free-of-charge for their own webiste and bar promotion/advertising/website purposes-additionally I provided free-of-charge 8 x 11 color glossy prints of the winners singing at the stare fair as keepsakes)
So couple those two events on separate visits to the place and you can begin to understand why I would find it to be an "uncomfortable" atmosphere..
This particular bar is in a small town and the community is very tight knit... so i suspect that there are some elements of suspicion about non-residents who might show up with a big camera interviewing people and taking shots.
First time in five years of going to all the places Ive gone and done storys on karaoke or bands etc that Ive ever encountered any of that. But I certainly experienced it on these two occaisions.
Now in all fairness this is limited to those two individuals---the rest of the staff there and other people i spoke and visited with were quite welcoming and helpful. The place is very well run and I would certainley stop there for lunch or dinner. But I would clearly have second thoughts about going for Karaoke or just to hang out.

unless i miss my guess, the alternate KJ is on a short leash with the owner there. i would further venture that the woman giving you the third degree is the town snoop, but has more skeletons in her closet than morticia munster! she probably has a thing going with wither the alternate KJ or one of the bar staff. y'know what they say, "pictures ar proof"! i wouldn't worry about the cast of supporting characters, unless of course the onwer or manager made you uncomfortable! congrats on all the stories you do regadring karaoke! it's nice to know there are folks out promoting and educating those less fortunate souls who are karaoke ignorant! lord knows i have neither the time, nor the inclination to do much promoting!
kudos to you!! ![High 5 :hi5:](./images/smilies/emot-highfive.gif)

Over the summer on vacation, I went to do karaoke at this really cute little dive bar at the beach. Everyone was super-nice and most of them were awesome performers. I got this huge round of applause for my rendition of "Lady Marmalade" and when I went back to my seat at the bar, my sister told me that the woman across the bar from me had sent me a drink. I was a little confused, until someone let me in on the fact that we were actually at a lesbian bar. We ended up having a great time, but I had some explaining to do to the nice woman that sent me the drink...

Owner, Manager's and Primary DJ Lady have ALWAYS been very welcoming along with the few people I actually know that live down there and I DO go to hang out with.
Just the backup DJ guy and the whigged out woman.
Other than that I have no problems with the place.
