Your problems seems to be your mixer. If I am not mistaken this is a DJ mixer. You need to upgrade to a mixer which has more microphone inputs and effects. Also using the rec out to line in is not helping the sound and is probably the reason for the low level of your mics. What kind of mixer is the Yamaha? I am assuming that it cannot mix the music with mics.
Good Luck

According to the specs the mixer has 2 microphone inputs and six line inputs. However, I do not know how much you will be able to tune in the sound on your mics with this mixer. I can't tell if it has tone controls for both mics (I doubt it) and does not seem to have an effects processor.

there are ALL kinds of better mixers than that one... good call on getting the person steered into the right direction.
i like mackie mixers myself, and after being at lonman's show, I can tell you he really makes it happen with his! My mixer's a bit inferior to his, but I don't play the huge hall he does!
Look around... do a search on Mixers, and ask around what ones the people would recommend.

I use a Mackie 1202VLZ Pro on one of my systems.
Great little mixer, but...
It's not the simplest, and you will be paying for a lot of features that you won't use. If I'm not mistaken they run just under $400. The led level set indicator is SO convienant. It makes adjusting the mic and music levels so easy that you can do it from around the block.
If you would like something a little more straight forward and a little less expensive look at the Alesis Multimix 8FX.
To find this mixer shearch for product #630157.
The 8FX has a led level set indicater and EFX.
It has 4 XLR mic inputs and 2 stereo inputs.
Cost-$150.

no slider knobs... but looks like a very sturdy unit!
