I gotta bunch of questions for you Steven:

So what you're saying is that Adobe Audition, CEP and even Audacity is too involved and overkill for what you need?

Are you still intending to use K-Solo as your sole source for karaoke/music backings or do you want to be able to use regular backings by Sound Choice, Chartbusters, etc.?

Do you want the software or hardware to give you any effects?

Now ideally and theoretically a good recording mix will sound pretty good whether it's being played through headphones, computer speakers, a car stereo or home stereo system.  Have you done some new recordings that aren't on K-Solo that have a good vocal to music balance? I'd like to hear the recordings you're talking about to hear how they sound on my end.

Which songs do you currently have up on K-Solo that you and others think have a good vocal balance? I'd like to give them a listen through headphones and speakers.

Ideally the hardware.  Any knowledge of mixer/digital recording studios that do this type thing ?   Nothing elaborate,  under 600

It's kind of tough finding something that isn't elaborate.  Ordinarily, people want lots of features and options these days.  I know what you mean though.

If you want a mixer/effects/hardware recorder all in one unit, this one here, the Boss BR 600, is good and fairly inexpensive.  I have a friend that owns one and has done some good recordings with it.  He's definitely not an electronics wiz either.

Normally they are new for close to $400.  eBay has some good prices on them too.

... too much for a simpleton like me to learn:)

I finally recorded live yesterday, rather than wait till I can find a recorder or move my msuic room around, I just ran my set up into my laptop. Not too shabby sounding of a mix, though not perfect (no honest, the singing was a 10 though,  I swear)  LMAO   :O  LOL  But I may just stick with this, no editing, no do-overs, just singing. I still gotta play with the mix a bit, but it isn't going to be NEAR as hard as learning my way around CEP or having to wear  headphones to sing:)[/quote]

I'm with you.  We are advocates of singing for fun and singing it right without a whole lot of fluff and editing.  Occasionally we might re-sing a section where we flubbed the lyrics and splice it into the 1st or 2nd take.  But we do not record our lyrics separate of the backings.  We either get it right or sing it again.  Once you're on stage you can't ask the sound guy to fix what you just screwed up.  We use a Behringer 1202FX along with the USB adaptor Behringer makes.  Audio/backings & mics into the mixer and a mixed signal leaves there to our home stereo amplifier.  The USB deal plugs directly into another PC we use to record ourselves.  Instead of using Adobe Audition we use Audacity becasue it doesn't require that 4 year learning curve.  I mean, we are here for fun and entertainment correct?  I'll never be a pro nor do I need to spend the money and time like a pro would.

behringer makes an entire mini 800 series. They run from 25 to 40 per component and all the components work together- but it saves you from buying something you don't need. I have the "mini mix" that I run my mic through intpo my computer- it allow me to adjust the sound levels and also t add some reverb if I want it. It's very basic but effective and only cost 30 on ebay.

I don't use any type of mixer for my recordings. They are all "au natuarale" with a bit of reverb thrown in, courtesy of the "Reverb" function on a Edirol R-09 recorder (hence my recordings never sound as good as most others here). Maybe someday when I have more time to play around with the production end of recording rather than simply trying to sing, I will see what mixers people prefer. So far, I've seen some pretty intriguing suggestions on this thread.
