Very good question!

To be honest, I do for my singing voice but not my talking voice, but I can't stand listening to myself! I only listen to myself to see if my mix is ok and if I can improve it.  I don't think I would want to have a different tone or sound like who ever, I'm happy with the gift that was given to me, but I would sure love to have some singing lesson and learn how to do more...

I don't jump in the forum to often but this is an interesting topic. I may be in the minority but I am satisfied with my singing voice. I don't mind listening to my recordings cause thats the only way I will ever be able to improve. I dont know how you can improve without listening to yourself or getting a vocal coach if improvement is your goal. I had some vocal training many years ago and it was a great help to have a professional objectively critique. Half the battle of learning to be able to tolerate your voice is selecting songs that you can do. I've tried and tried thru the years to do songs that just don't work for me. Knowing what your capabilities are and pretty much sticking to that will be a more enjoyable experience in my opinion. If I stick to songs that I can do a decent job on I don't mind listening to them and trying to pick them apart for flaws. So, do I like my singing voice? Overall I am satisfied with it if I stick with what I think works for me.

I DON'T like my RECORDED voice, regardless of what I am singing or saying, and no amount of coaching will change that.

I do like to hear "me" sing and talk live.  But when I listen to a recording it's not "me", it's some "stranger" singing/speaking and he has a voice that I detest!!!
Sorry, to be so blunt.

It is confusing that others say that "me" and the guy/"stranger" on the recording sound identical!  Hmm?

you will get over that I promise lol radio djs have to listen to themselves, to the way they have presented a voice break, the continuity etc...to that end they have to get over the distaste for hearing themselves. Soon (if you are sure that you are in the right job) you stop hearing yourself differently and start hearing the nuances of your speaking/singing performance...how could you have done this or that better. You simply train your ear to listen for something different Eric. Sure it takes a while but it does happen.

I hate hearing recordings of myself...they sound so different from what I'm hearing come out of my mouth.  Thankfully, I've started to overcome it a bit recently by trying to play around with my recording software.  I still think I sound wierd, but at least I'm starting to tolerate listening :)

I really like my voice when I'm singing  :D  Can't stand to listen to it recorded, unless the mix is very good. Just a raw recording of me, makes my skin crawl, and it's kinda embarassing to listen to, particularly if other people are listening also. It's a funny thing, you sound a lot different in your head, if you know what I mean

In a sense I like my voice.  Forget false modesty, it is a very good instrument, plenty of range, plenty of colour, plenty of power.  BUT! and it is a very big BUT, I don't have much in the way of musical talent, so learning to play this splendid instrument, is a bit frustrating.
I came to singing late in life and am very much enjoying the experience (and the kindness and support of all the people on this site)

So, I suppose the answer is that I am learning to like my voice as I find out more about what it can do.  Wish I'd started 50 odd years ago, but c'est la vie (which reminds me, if you haven't yet watched "La Vie en Rose" do so at once!)
Be lucky, Ian

Thanks, everyone, for responding to this query. I have been singing in an organized fashion (choirs, a capella groups, etc.) since I was in 2nd grade (sometime the beginning of the '60s)...have always had a "steady" voice with very good pitch so always opted for group singing. I truly enjoy that type of singing, wherein your voice complements the other voices in the group. To me that is much more of a challenge than straight solo singing (I sang the 5th part in a 5-part group - often no recognizable melody, just jumping around, rounding out chords).  When I started singing solo I truly had to learn to use vibrato (at the tender age of mid 40s!). As I age (somewhat older than 40s now), I notice the vibrato gets wider and I now need to struggle to control it; still have great pitch and when I listen back to recordings of my singing, I have learned not to cringe, and to look at the positive aspects of my performance (phrasing, dynamics, pitch, etc) instead of "Oh gawd, I hate the tonal quality of my voice." Lots of people like it .. silly them!

Karen
