I'm an artist working on a project and I'm looking for volunteers to sing their favorite song.  It doesn't matter what your favorite song is, I'm sure you'll sound wonderful singing it.   I only need 15 seconds of you singing, so even if you only remember that one part, the one that goes dah dah dah dah dum dah... that would be great.

In order to record your song, I've set up a voicemail at (347) 351 - 3300. After the beep, just start singing. I won't keep your phone number and the call will stay between us.  You will be completely anonymous, so you don't have to identify yourself.

Calling the line should take less than a minute or two. Thanks for your time; I can't wait to hear you.

And just where is that area code?   I'd be very wary about just picking up the phone and calling some number without knowing who I'm calling....  

Anyone hear of the "You've won a contest... phone the number to claim it"  type of scams?   Poor sods who called found out later that the call had cost them thousands of dollars as the call went through to some Carribean Island where they were charged a colossal sum per minute.

Right now, I'm suspecting that this is exactly that type of scam!

Yeah, I know it sounds suspicious.  My first plan of action was just to walk up to people on the street in Manhattan and  ask them to sing to me, apparently that type of behavior makes people even more suspicious  :D Also, its hard just walking up to people on the street and asking them to sing.   People were really nice with their time, but out of 20, only 1 person actually sang ("Marvin Gaye - Let's Get it on") and the only reason I think he sang for me was because he was with his girlfriend.

To be honest, the project hasn't really taken shape yet.  I'm waiting to see what the tone of the voicemails were before I know what I'm going to do with them. I was inspired by a woman on the subway who was singing while listening to her headphones.  It was late at night and there were only a few other people sitting around me.  It was the song itself that I could relate to. I didn't recognize the song but it moved me.

I got a prepaid cell from Radioshack so I could use its voicemail for recording and I assume the Area code is NY, either that or its some generic prepaid cell areacode (if there is such a thing).

I've gotten a few voicemails already, and its really cool.  Some people start laughing halfway through, I like the idea that people are getting a kick out of calling.  I could really use more men, so if you think you'd be up for it, you could always call from a Payphone, or a friends phone.  I'm not collecting or keeping any of the information.  I only offer this as a compromise for your privacy concerns.

if anyone was interested then I would suggest they record 15 secs using their usual manner of recording then send it to you, that way the integrity of the clip is preserved and not made unrecognisable by the poor sound quality on an answer machine

347 is the area code for Flushing, Jamaica, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx and Queens, overlays with 718 and 917, New York.

At 7:52 PM EST - I Received a call from that area code... Didn't recognize it so I didn't answer.

All that aside, I am curious...

Okay, so you call the number and sing "ta do do do - ta da da da"

What is the point?
Why are you requesting this?
How are you going to be using these recordings?

I'd like to address your questions in reverse order:

I'm not sure how I'll be using the recordings exactly, so far, The best idea I have is to do a live reading accompanied by the songs, something personal and candid.  I hope the tone of the piece falls somewhere between "My dinner with Andre" and "American Idol".

I'm requesting these because I was moved by the moment on the subway (I mention the moment in my previous post).  Often technology is thought to divide us.  in fact, there are few rare moments where it draws us closer and leaves a connection.  When I was riding the subway that night.  That woman was singing along to her disc man, even though she wasn't the best singer and I didn't know what she was singing, I was touched.  I think there's a lot of power in a stranger expressing themselves.

The point is that I've set up a place where people can express themselves and participate in a project where they will be appreciated.  The goal is to keep the exchange anonymous on both ends. I have no idea who's calling me, its random generosity and graciousness on behalf of the participants.  So far, I think everyone who has called had fun calling.  Some people sound nervous, and some sound highly amused.  I'm seeing sides of these people I would not be given the chance to see otherwise.

Please note, I can't stress this enough, I am not retaining the phone numbers.  the fact that you got a call from a 347 number last night is a total coincidence.

Also, The craigslist postings might disappear, Each post is tied to an email address and craigslist doesn't let you post similar requests at the same time to discourage spamming. I've been periodically moving the posts to other cities and trying different sections. so these two links may be inactive soon.

I like your idea a lot, but for now the presence of the phones low fidelity is to leave the presence of technology in the exchange. It's part of the message.  I'm recording the calls straight from a phone tap, so its not going off of an answering machine per se, The audio sounds like its on the telephone, but its pretty high quality considering.
