Social networking site finally gets into the groove with licensed songs
By Jake Coyle

updated 6:37 p.m. CT, Mon., April. 28, 2008
NEW YORK - You're sitting at home online and suddenly you get an irresistible urge. You absolutely have to belt out R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" and share it with the world.

You now have that ability, thanks to the new MySpace Karaoke, to be launched Tuesday by the social networking site.

MySpace Karaoke (ksolo.myspace.com) debuts nearly two years after Fox Interactive, a division of News Corp., which owns MySpace, purchased the karaoke site kSolo.com. The combination of MySpace and kSolo allows users to upload audio recordings of them singing everything from R. Kelly to Richie Valens to their profile page.

The rest of the story can be found here, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24358965/

I figured it would only be a matter of time before this happened to social networking.

Comcast Cable has karaoke OnDemand in our area now. Limited song selection but you can have karaoke piped through your TV via cable. All selections so far are SoundChoice.

What do you think it will do to our live show business?  I feel it will help it although it sort of leaves a bad taste in my mouth. We are the ones that invested many thousands of dollars With SC and others and had to buy many songs we will never use. We made karaoke what it is today. It was due to our hard that made it popular and made it last through the lean times. We cant download or use the net. Now people can sing for nothing? WE are still left out in the cold..I really dont think it is fair. What do you think?

It may actually have a positive impact because people will be able to practice in the safety and comfort of their own homes....and people may compliment them...and when they feel like they're "good enough" they may venture out and sing in public. I hope this is the case.

One of the things that brought karaoke back here was the influx of kids including college that grew up with a karaoke machine and are of age now. The supply of singers will continue to grow more and more.

And good systems in good venues will never hurt again like we did for awhile.

First of all Sound Choice has no interest in what it does to the KJ's Business. They basically used us to get to the singers, now their posture towards the KJ has changed and they don't need us. That would not be the first time other businesses have been used to get market share.

I think it will have very little effect on our businesses, unless of course the selection becomes 10-20K songs. Still the live effect of karaoke will be the standard everyone wants. I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh I'm a firm believer that if the live shows decrease again like before it might be the end. And if SC thinks the home market wont suffer they are mistaken.  They made a major mistake in judging the market before. They attributed their decrease in sales to pirates an didnt realize that for a year or two the amount of karaoke hosts were 10% of what they were before. We have picked up in this area but it is nowhere near what it was. Not even 1/2 if that much. If they dont support the work horses of the industry they are cutting their own throat.

I just visited ksolo. Never been there.

The selection is really small. I wouldn't be able to run a show with it, and I'm just starting out and have a light book.

I'm going to let my singers know about it anyway. They are looking for ways to rehearse and it might be a tool they can use.

I don't see it as a threat at all. Maybe a help if they get some more stuff.

Perhaps that's whey Yahoo could afford to buy them. Singsnap has a large selection.
