When a small stage is walled in on 3 sides all the singer hears is the monitor. There is no sweet spot where one can hear the balance between monitor and mains. Anymore it takes 2 or 3 songs for me to blow out the tubes ans I opened a new gig the other night. I was struggling until I walked out where I could hear the mains. Regulars from our main gig were struggling also. There the singers are out in front of the mains. Years ago there was not that much difference but as systems become more sophisticated with audio processing and adjusted for acoustics it is radically different.

I am seriously considering putting an old JBL Eon (not G2) chaining off a main and aiming back towards the stage. The levels would be critical but it sure would improve the situation. I would still leave the stage monitor (JBL Eon 10 G2) but try to balance them. Thoughts???

Maybe try a nice set of small studio reference monitors...

I agree, worked with an in house system at a popular restraunt bar a few years ago, the sound was deplorable but completely out of my control.  I added 2 carvin studio monitors (very small) and at the least the singers could hear themselves and the music.  These are small and can mounted on top of a mic stand.

Then next season I convinced them to allow me to use my own sound and it was much better there after.   I hated working in rooms with their own systems and no one to maintain them.

Look at a small Galaxy monitor.  Mounts on a mic stand & can work well in a small place that can't support a full sized monitor.

Let me try to explain it better. The audio out the mains is highly processed and adjusted for the acoustics of the venue. The reverbs even add energy to the overall effect. However in some stage situations all the singer hears is one monitor no FX no reverbs just a bland vocal over background.  They just listened to their friend sing who sounded awesome and they are standing there wondering how come I aint? You can see it in their face. The more they struggle the worse they get.  With my experience I do the same thing. I have to walk out in front of the mains.

In that case --can't you run the monitor completely wet with all the same EQ and Effects as the mains ???....just at a lower "monitor volume" ??

Yea it helps Jam but even the vocal music ratio might be different. It's just not the same. I could daisy chain out of a main but as a singer I do like to hear the "raw" vocal at times.

Ill post this photo again to give you an idea. As far as audio goes you are in your own little world.

From that pic it seems that the stage area is "isolated" from your main sound, the low ceiling doesn't help I'm sure.  I'd try a small monitor right on the edge of that stage floor.  Keeping it low should help prevent feedback.  Feed your monitor the same signal as the mains, just at a lower level, that's what I'd try.

Solution....

We daisy chained from the speaker on the right to an Eon10 G2. Out of view (right side) there is a small table in the corner of the dance railing. This is where we put the 10 directly at the stage.  It worked perfect. In fact in a majority of the setups now I will not have the old stage monitor setup but something like this. It works better for novices for they hear what the system is doing and no more complants about I cant hear the monitor etc....

After a couple of tries we finally got the system tuned for this venue. It was the best I have ever heard this system inside. In every song the bass sounded like there was a 18" bass on the floor.   Bypassing the Aphex 104 dropped it in half. For those with smaller venues I strongly recommend this proc (104 or 204) before adding a bass.

Another good chat with the owner and during teardown got 3 or 4 thumbsup from him. His best friend and a reg came over and chatted and said we put on one hell of a show. Another good gig in the making. I'm still wired  LMAO

This comes from an old old man in the winter of his karaoke. I have been burned out and made a comeback. Forgot about the old rules and crap promulgated on here and other forums. I started doing my thing and having fun. We look forward to setting up and get charged from the audience and singers. DO YOUR OWN SHOW!!!
There are no rules or quick fixes or ways to do things. Just look at the audience see what they are reacting to and GO!!! Dont imitate, present self and self will grow for if you love it, your love and enthusiasm will charge the audience....
