Update: Pulled the Behringer board, put the Mackie back in - problem solved. Not sound card...some sort of incompatability between computer and Behringer. No money spent, problem solved..>Best kind of resolution.

I appreciate all the advice, however I should have just done this first, as the problem began to appear when we started using the Behringer board. (We had not used it with the computer, had used it when we were using the CDGs and player and it worked great, so there was no reason to think it wouldn't work with the computer setup we have... Live and Learn)

Sorry didn't see your problem earlier, but I too had the same problem with the Behringer Mixer I bought.  Fingered it out that it was the channel PAD & Gain settings I was using.  Messed around with the settings and all was fine.

I wonder if the sound output setting on the computer is too high for that mixer... overdriving it

That's the conclusion I cam to.  I ting I used the -10db pad on the input channel, and the distortion went away
