The lower the frequencies the harder it is to control. a thick wall still leak the very low frequencies and may absorbed most of the mid low and the hi low.
In the case of Charmin's room where bluegrass is the predominent music genere, reducing the bass ( which is not a most important part of the music) to the min will be the most cost effective.

Polystyrene does work.
If placed between the wall and the pannel.
It would not work on top of the panneling.
Sandwiched it does the job cheaply.
It try's to create a room within a room.
Rockwool is the best but expensive.

The space bettween a fiber board and the wall is best fill with air; and its free.
