We were scheduled tonight at the bar we have been doing spot gigs. Walked in and there was a band setup. I had the barmaid call the owner and he said I dont know whats goin on with that son of mine. Have a beer and Ill be down at 6:30. He paid me the $150 and said you dont have to play tonight. I owe ya 4 hours!! He just shrugged and laughed. I will get him 4 extra hours one way or another but we constantly go over and dont charge. This is another bar owner I clicked with after 2 minutes. I can say anything to him and visa versa. They dont come along like this very often ..but when they do you will bust your (@$%&#!)

I had one beer which I paid for Then left and drove home I broke a rule I dont drink and drive.. There is a liquor store here if you get 2 sixpacks of Bud it is $10.

I am sitting here debating and I want some sage advice from yall I am scheduled for the 5th of July. (The owners son is the mngr and hires the entertainment) DO I HONOR THAT? The mood I'm in right now I will work for George the owner only. When somebody breaks their word with me I tend to be done..My word is gold.... How do I handle it? How do you tell an old Greek gentleman you will not honor verbal contracts with his son?

The rest of the story My host called me fri morn and said Sotorious left a message the bar would be closed due to a fight. I called his cell phone and left a message and he did not return my call. He did not have the balls to lie to me. I'm a little pissed.

If I left a message with an owner asking to confirm whether an upcoming gig is on or not and he didn't return my call, I would assume that it's not. But from your description of him, one would think that he would let you know.

Personally if I hadn't heard from the owner I'd call the bar and ask the staff if they knew anything. Especially in this case, just to see whether or not they are even open. That must have been a hellacious fight if it closed the joint indefinitely.

To me it sounds like a gig to keep. I'd just find a way to make the communication better.
I'd start getting my show dates in writing. Then the week prior to the show put up posters in the bar. The son (manager) will see you've been booked for that date and if he has a conflict with what he's scheduled he can call you.

Let it go for this time. If it happens again then tell the OWNER you will be leaving. Then tell the son you will be leaving also.

Either way the owners loyalty will be with the son when things come to brass tacks.

But u DO NEED TO HAVE A SITDOWN meeting with the son and make clear the situation and your expectations. Get eveyone on the same page. Try working with him and make it work out.

Give it one more try then bail if you have to. This might have been a simple mistake.

But may be also that the son doenst hold you in high regard with the proper amount of RESPECT!!

Actually, I WOULDN'T let it go this time.

Since there's been a scheduling conflict, from now on, you need to have confirmation.

This isn't only you that's been inconvienienced... it's your customers... theirs and yours! It's YOUR reputation that's also being affected!

The main trouble is the other KJ'S have killed it and if we cant be there every week we cant build up business. George and I have had discussions about this. A few times some of our singers have come over there but if they have to confirm or ask for a date that doesnt work either. You have to get to the point where people are calling the bar and asking if it is Ollie doing karaoke and we werent doing enough shows to get at that stage.

to me, you have an owner who does the right thing when a mistake is made (he paid you). one time , its just a mistake. if it happens again its a trend and i would get worried.
