Well none of these are really designed to be used for PA purposes, these are designed to be used in a controlled studio environment, they are going to handle volume very well. Two of these are "nearfield" monitors meaning they are to be used in close proximity - usually between 2-5 feet away.
The JBL's would work better than the other 2.

Thank lonman,
Do you have any recommendations having the for less than $300/pair and about 14" high? I will shop for a mixer or powered mixer depending on what type of speakers I end up purchasing.
Thanks,
Dustin

Are you using a home stereo? You didn't really go into the rest of the system. I would recommend getting a small powered mixer & just dedicate your entire karaoke use to it's own system.
Like I said if you use those JBL's, they'd probably work ok. You just won't be able to turn the system up very loud without the extra possibility of blowing them. Definitely wouldn't be able to use them in anyplace other than a home setting.

Lonman,
This is strictly for home use. I will use my home theather to play the music and the video (to the TV) from a karaoke player (midi dvd).
The speakers I am looking for will be used for vocals only.
If I purchase the JBL, I will then get this powered mixer (like the compact size):

Thanks,
Dustin

I like my PHM518M fine. Bear in mind it is mono, and that running two speakers you will run them in parallel. So you need 8 ohm speakers, as the most it can handle on output is 4 ohms.
I use it with a pair of Kustom KPC10 speakers, and it is plenty loud. The speakers aren't great, but tolerable.

mckyj57,
I had no idea the PMP518M is mono (from the description). Would I even notice that it is mono (vs digital, stereo etc) in a typical home karaoke setup?
Thanks,
Dustin

The best home system I put together used a pair of JBL EON 10 G2's. They can actually be used in a small bar and compare to the 15's. They are also excellent for fill. One drawback is they run about $800/pr. I would like to try about 6 or 8 daisy chained and placed right with a bass bin.. It would be awesome.

If you're looking to handle vocals only, I'd consider something small, like a Mackie SRM350 or JBL Eon 10 G2.
You can find these on eBay and the like pretty inexpensively. For vocals only it's likely overkill.
You might be able to get by with something even smaller, like the SRM150 which is a hot spot monitor depending on where you're planning to set up and how many people will be there singing with you.
For a small karaoke setup, I'd conder a small all-in-one system like the Fender PD150. I've seen these for under $400 and they'd work as a small karaoke system for a small group of people.
But in the end, 'home use' doesn't tell us if you're trying to fill a massive basement or a small living room. Can you give a little better idea of what you mean by 'use at home'?

Thanks, Dustin If you are going to use this strictly for vocals, then being mono makes absolutely no difference as even in stereo boards you are going to pan your vocals straight up - essentially making the vocals mono - ie same signal in both channels.
Chances are even if you used the music through it as well, you wouldn't notice THAT big of a difference. The 518 will be a decent match for the JBL's.

Thank you everyone for your helpful inputs. Without your advice, I would have made some stupid mistakes (such as getting the behringer monitors for example).
I will use this system for vocals only and to fill an average living room 20X15X10, so I don't need anything huge.
What do you think of this system:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=630506
I can get this from a local person here for $200.
Or should I go with a combination of the PMP518M and the speakers mentioned in the thread?
thanks,
dustin

My sugestion is a mackie powered mixer with 2 yamaha cm12 speakers, then you can run your home karaoke seperate from your home stereo system, and have a good gig set-up as well.Size of the mackie depends on your wattage needs. The cm12 are my bands monitors for a large venue and our frontals for small venues and they sound great, and what I plan to use for kj gigs.I will not own nothing beringer.

Or should I go with a combination of the PMP518M and the speakers mentioned in the thread? Very interesting. The old KJ'S here will tend to recommend more than you need. I have run 100 watts all my life in home systems starting before stereo. I have lit bars with 50 watts. I would say go with it.You can always improve the system one piece at a time. I would be very interested in hearing this system.
If you dont buy it I would be very interested in buying it at $200 for future home installs or for renting for private home parties.. I currently have a 100% rating on Ebay with over 180 positves and pay with Paypal, And would appreciate a chance to buy it As an engineer I would beef it up a bit. Put in an adequate power supply and replace the opamps with tighter specs.

I wouldn't go with the Kustom, myself, because I don't think the speakers are very good. If you didn't have the size constraint, I would recommend the MTX TP-112 which sound great and are driven well by the PMH518M's 180 watts.

The acoustics in a 10X15 room or even one with twice the area will not handle much over 50-75 watts. These speakers at prob 60 watts ave apiece if they havent been abused with prolonged periods of max volume they should be fine. If not they can replaced with 75 watt speakers if the amp truly puts out 100 watts. For a powered mixer with FX and speaker stands it would make a good starter kit for $200. I would buy it sight unseen and not even listened to. I would rent it for $100/night.
I have a system with about a thousand watts in power and with added speakers can run 1400 watts, (woodstack 69 Had a total of 3500 watts) (woodstck 99 needed about a million ) many thousand dollars invested and would be totally useless in a room that small.

For a room that size you can use almost anything.
The Kustom will work just fine. I'd only consider something a little bigger so you can use it outside for parties, etc.
