I'd like to wish everyone a safe and happy U.S. Independence Day.

In New Zealand we celebrate our heroes on ANZAC Day in April. But there is one story my parents spoke of that happened in 1942 which always comes to mind on July 4th.

An American B17 Flying Fortress bomber was at Whenuapai Airbase in New Zealand during WW2. Its engines were running rough, but the American crew turned down assistance from the RNZAF mechanics who offered to help, due to concerns over security. In the dead of night it had taken off from Whenuapai but failed to gain any altitude, and the aircraft then exploded with such a force a house that was not so nearby actually moved on its piles. The explosion was apparently heard across most of Auckland and many people thought it was the beginning of the Japanese invasion!

The real tragedy is that the Americans did not want the RNZAF personnel near the bomber, and told them so in no uncertain terms. It is a poignant reminder, not only of how, with total dedication, the Armed Services Personnel live on the edge of danger to protect their country's security, but that the danger does not end when they are away from the battlefield.

God Bless America!
