Wow, what a wonderful forum. I am the original poster.
I am using a computer as source. My receiver is Pioneer VSX-84. I borrowed my friend's Audio2000 AKJ7150 and I think it is just average. If I turn the 7150's volume over half, then I get an 'overload' warning on the Pioneer. So now I use the Pioneer to control volume. Is that normal for mixer->receiver?
Also, what wireless MIC do you recommend?
Thanks for all the replies.

Oh, and I am no professional and this is for my living room, so I'd like something that can fit in my equipment rack, i.e., something looks like receiver/dvd.

I don't understand why you're using the Pioneer VSX-84 at all. The mixer amp does everything you need it to with the mics and working with the input of the cdg music... and out to speakers.

I own the AKJ-7050, and it's a little workhorse. GREAT for home, and if you want more power you can always piggyback a larger amp. If you don't, then leave it off and have less weight for portability. BTW, this machine beats heck out of wat Mick mentioned. As you get better at sound management, you can also piggyback a mixing board into the Effector jacks if you so desire.
It's a great basis for a system by itself, and expandability makes it good for ANY use- home or professional.
IMHO, the Yamahas don't have what it takes- but that's just me.

I own the AKJ7050. Although I have not used it for a couple of years, it is a perfect unit for a home karaoke system. It's easy to use, blends in well with other home electronics (resembles a typical A/V receiver) and provides enough volume for a rocking house party. I recently visited a show where the KJ was using this unit with EV speakers. It sounded fine. I have since upgraded to a Mackie CFX12 and SRM speakers. I see no reason to discourage the AKJ7050 for a home system or an entry level system for a small gig.
Just my thoughts.

I see a reason to discourage it unless you are totally CD-based.
It has a bad preamp, poor effects, no chance of a monitor speaker, and no compression. And most of all, no channel EQ. If you are looking for strictly amateur sound, it is just fine. It has one or two small features that can help, i.e. video. (I found a $6.00 composite video splitter cable works fine for me and replaces it.)
For a CD-based non-karaoke DJ, this mixer is probably better because of cross-fader functions. But more and more people are computer-based.
The Yamaha MG82CX gives you pro-level sound. If you buy a pair of Tapco Thump or Behringer B215A speakers, you can practically get speakers and mixer for less than the cost of the AKJ7050. So it will cost less, and sound much better. With the potential to move to a room as large as you want to handle with the addition of a powered monitor and a sub.
For the vehement defenders who claim they get pro-level sound out of it, I take that with a grain of salt. Pros have compression, they have monitor speakers in appropriate situations, and they have effects processors. And most importantly, they have channel eq and eq for their speakers. I have sang in lots of places using the equivalent of the AKJ7050, and the sound is always lackluster.

I'm an EE. There's nothing wrong with the pre=amp for that machine, and as a guy who owned an electronic component distributorship that supplied this manufacturer, I know that the y use top end audio components. That can't be said for Yamaha, who use 50ppm resistors ( the best are 25ppm or lower), metallized polyester caps ( the best are metallized polypropylene, poly carbonate, or polystyrene), etc.
As for compression, and other features: This poster is a beginner and might take a bit of time to learn enough to use certain features. When he does, as previously posted, he can add all he wants to the AKJ7050- a full board if so required-even the Yamaha, though I would go with Mackie, or almost anyone else.
As for sound, match the AKJ7050 with EV speakers and the sound will be terrific. I've even heard it produce decent sound from Gemini speakers, which is incredible as they are NOT known for quality.
1) I've a professional host for many years ( going back to cassettes and lyric sheets), I'm an Electronic Engineer, and a past owner of an electronic distributorship.
Bottom line: your best bet is the AKJ7050 by Audio 2000 for your home.
