Aloha! This question is almost embarrassing, but I have a computer headache from trying to figure this out myself. Here goes... hubby has offered to buy me a home karaoke system... we know nothing about them... we can spend about $200. - $300... what do you recommend??? I found a VocoPro DVG390K player on eBay for $67. and that would leave me money for a mic and some songs... yay? nay? What about those Leadsinger mics? Only thing is, I would like more flexibility with the songs. Should I repost this in the technical forum? Mahalo!

Welcome to the board! You will find much help here. I think it's best to post to the technical forum as you will get more responses. $2-300 is not a big budget because including music you will go beyond that. I have a friend with a vocopro mic with built in music but those are all midi.

Welcome to KS.
You will get a better answer to your question if you ask in the main forum. I will move this thread there.

Personally I'd pass on this. The last hardware player I bought was a DVD player with karaoke capabilities... a Vocostar... which also came with a mic and was under $100. It was more stable than the Vocopro I have.

To start with almost no investment at all go computer. Download Karafun, which is free, and then purchase exactly what you want to sing as single songs from a download site. Without going into names, which you can find easily with a search, there are sites that charge as little as 99c per song, with 20% off on orders of over $5. You can be singing in an hour for practically nothing.

I’m going give an a thought for how you should proceed. I am not sure anyone else will agree but here goes. When I started out several years back I got a fairly inexpensive all in one unit at a discount store. It had a little b&w screen fairly awful sound and a couple cheap mics. It cost $150 dollars. I ordered a couple of music collections on line for another $100. When the music came the fun began. It was such great fun and at the time it did not matter to me that it did not sound so great.

Eventually I realized I had spent a thousand plus dollars buying music and decided to buy an expensive (for me) system that sounded great. I still sing with the first disks I bought even though the old system is long gone. So shop around, then buy the best system you can afford even if it is only something for $100 or so. Then spend some money for some good music collections because that’s were the fun is.

Later maybe you can budget for a more impressive sounding system. If you enjoy singing your first system probably won’t be the only one you ever buy. Point is get started and have fun.

Jim's got a valid opinion!

I also like the computer one.

There are a LOT of ways to get started in karaoke. It depends on the person who's interested... what's their skill levels in all areas concerned? I wouldn't recommend computer karaoke if they don't want to play with it.

Remember folks... he's a NEWBIE!!! :)

Jian, Thank you for moving my thread.
All else, Thank you for the tips.

I am leaning towards the computer now because we do actually have a desktop in the living room that we can view on our tv. Then all I would need is a mic right? Which mic would suit me best?

Start small since you are a newbie. I started out with all-in-one unit with one speaker and two cheapo wired mikes in the house. I moved the unit to my garage and tied it into my 4-channel stereo and my TV set. Later a bought dual wireless mics. Just adding and modifying as I get a little spare money.

After researching the forums, I am going to go with either the Sennheiser E835 mic or the Shure SM-58S mic.

Now I need to know where to find these sites where you can get 99c per song. Can someone please tell me?! I surfed the web already.

$.99 per song doesn't seem very legal. The cheapest 'legal' site I know of is $1.49 per 'select' songs. Otherwise they run like $2.49-$3.49 per track.
http://www.tricerasoft.com/cgi-bin/Kara ... /index.asp
http://selectatrack.com/index.aspx
Are a couple of 'legal' sites.

I don't like the quality, but CAVS made a few songs themselves (or had someone else brand them that way) and I believe they also have some THM for $.99. I remember about 4 years ago buying a few.

I would also assume they are legal or the site would have been shut down by now.

You can get that at Tricerasoft.com if you buy a 100-pack. Otherwise, it is $1.50-$3.50.

Again, thank you for the help.

I found this site too, www.buykaraokedownlads.com . Their price is .99c or 5+ .79c. They seem legal. Anyone ever used them?

From what I understand they are not legal - be careful. Anything under a dollar is almost too good to be true.

I've been picking a few things up from this outfit so I hope that they are legal! They're based here in the US, so I've been assuming that they are OK, and only the old stuff is 99c. Newer releases are more in line with other download sites. Any firm info Lonnie?

As far as quality, some tracks seem a bit muffled (a problem I've experienced with all download sites) and on the really old stuff there are onscreen artifacts occasionally that point suspiciously to Audiograbber as the ripping tool.

I have also picked up a few things from this site.

According to their Terms of Service they are legal and have all the licenses
I also noticed that they are based out of Manitoba with a retail store in
Las Vegas and have been around since 2006.

Seems that if they were illegal that someone would have caught on by now.

If you google karaoke downloads, "Buykaraokedownloads" is the first sponsored link that comes up. They are a large public presence and have paid to be there.... whatever google's price is to be first. They are hardly hiding in the background the way I would think an illegal site would.

i'm with Bill - Karafun is good software, especially since it's free! A few too many options but good once you get your head round it. Their download site is pretty good too.

That was just scuttlebutt on other forums as well & they are hardly ever mentioned when being asked about download sites. I don't know for sure, just stated to be careful - mainly from where you download from. Just because you find something on Google, they have a pro looking website - doesn't make a legal site. Being they are a sponsered link - meaning they paid (i'm assuming), chances are they are ok.
