Hey everyone. I don't know much about karaoke equipment or hardware, but I thought you all might be able to help me. I'm doing an art project involving karaoke, the premise of the project will be to have the audience sing popular karaoke songs, while our group will (hopefully) "hack" the karaoke equipment or software and change lyrics out for other text of our choosing.
Is this something that can be done live? Are there limitations? What kind of karaoke systems/platforms should we gear ourselves toward to achieve this goal?
Thanks much!

I am not aware of any hardware player or program that can do what you are getting at. It may be possible to use a dual-player system; one loaded with the real song and the other with your hacked track. but you need to prepare the hacked track in advance. A multi track recording program may be use as playback, but you may have problem with sync.
You may want to use vocal effect as a hack. There are tons of it that you can use ie, robot vox, micky mouse etc.

rdubwilkins,
The audience sings the "Original Lyrics" and your group sings the "Hacked Lyrics?"
Are you singing at the same time? Like up on a stage?

No, we were thinking of setting it up as normal as possible. We would provide a KJ to get members of the audience to come up, and sing karaoke like someone would normally do, picking their own song off of our list.
However, they would be aware that at certain points throughout the song we would sublimate our own lyrics which they would sing in place of the normal ones. The new lyrics will be the basis of the piece, which will carry political connotations and create a weird intermingling of a karaoke aspect which is personal, fun, and popular culturally based with new lyrics which make people stop and think, hearing/reading text that has very serious implications.
We chose karaoke because the pieces we are doing need to be technologically based and non-passive art (the audience needs to interact, touch, smell, hear, participate in the art). The hacking aspect reinforces the juxtaposition of serious executive order text with a fun/lighthearted social medium.

rdubwilkins,
You could spend a lot of money trying to insert Overlays that are in SYNC'.
I would use a CDG Creator i.e. Power Karaoke CDG Creator Pro or Karaoke Builder Studios.
This way you can easily insert your text and have it exactly the way you want it.
Then convert them to avi or mpg and burn them to a DVD.
Now you don't need to hire a KJ, just bring your DVD player and connect to the schools equipment.
P.S. If this is
