Johnny Reverb: Wow - so this guy would build a crowd, get a vibe going, then just drop it?

Was he completely unable to read a situation or what?

you got it dude....lol..throughout the night, the crowd was very international, Uk, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Germany, China, Japan, Korea....not many US citisens....I really enjoyed the people, and that's why I stayed(besides it being behind my hotel...lol)....most people just wanted to watch(my favorite karaoke crowd). He had a routine, and the size of the crowd didn't seem to matter to him. Beats anything I've ever seen......take care, our friend across the pond.......

Sounds actually like a good DJ but a poor host? I'd never drop a vibe - when it's strong you keep it going!

Agree! This is what i don't get about a lot of kjs- they don't understand that a consistent vibe or flow in their shows goes a long way!

Kjs that SHOULD but don't use filler music (if they're rotation isn't jam packed) should realise that dead air kills the party. It's like someone hit the "stop" button just when it was getting good. Now the kj has to jump start the party again or HOPE that someone picks an upbeat song.

or worse....kjs that think they're funny with witty bantor making silly observations between every song. Not everyone wants to have to listen and pay attention to verbal garbage-......they wanna have fun- with music it's automatic and relatable.

30 seconds of good lively filler music not only lifts the potential cloud off a slow song, but plants ideas for fun songs in the heads of other singers.

Went to see a fellow kj's show tonite and he doesn't seem to get the idea he's NOT funny and there's NO FLOw to his show. I told him to kiss my grits when he said he doesn't need music or lights to add atmosphere. 2 hours into his 'show' and only 5 people.....at the bar NOT paying attention. That killed me to watch his kj-suicide on his 7th show there. Won't be there much longer. -too bad- has 5 kids and needs the extra job.

Told him to come to here to the 'scene' and learn a few things if he dares- he said he doesn't need any help. He learned all he needs to know from going to karaoke shows for a whole year in kansas and watching 3 kjs do their jobs.

...amateurs...too many inexperienced close-minded know-it-all know-nothings. Nice guy and decent personality- just NOT funny or entertaining.

sorry..end rant. Thanks for letting me share. :)
we now return you to our regularly scheduled program.

I learned a while back that filler music for my type of show is essential, even if only for 20 seconds. As you say, it bookends a bad performance and lifts it. it keeps the levels going and so on.

Also, I have my banter, but it's not in ever break between songs, it's when it's suitable. People have not come out to listen to me talk.

kj suicide,

yeah, it's sad to watch someone "kill" themselves like that! I mean, you FEEL for them. "Don't they SEE that they're killing it?" you wonder...

chances are, they don't. THey think it's just an off night!

Very sad!

R.I.P. stupid KJ!

Some of us are funny and some people do come out for the unpredictability of the banter. Engaging the crowd is a much more effective strategy then talking to your mixer. I use the word poop alot, and I almost think I have to find new material. People are saying it more than me now.

It's tough for a rookie or an idiot to compete if there's a successful show nearby.

On the topic of filler music - I don't use it, but respect its place. My show is computer based and that helps tremendously from an administrative standpoint. Singers hand me the mics after their part (say when the Sound Choice screen appears when the words are done), and I use the outros and intros to blah, blah, blah and call next singers (unless its something like comfortably nnumb, or free bird (long version) - I let those play out). I find if a person's song starts, they're pretty quick to the stage. The downside of that is I do sometimes have to restart songs or pause if the intro is short or singer is slow. 8-12 measures is perfect. If I pause, I use the time to talk smack and prop the bartenders or make other announcements.

We dont like any silence . For a sense of the crowd energy here is a video the owner shot. I didnt think he was drinking until I watched this.

No breaks here. I wait until a longer song 4 min or more to use the rest room. Of course, the smoking ban statewide takes affect in June 2009, so I don't know what I'll do then.

We had the smoking ban passed a few years back "No smoking in a workplace" - so you'd have to go outside.

I was NOT looking forward to that - but you know what? People (@$%&#!) and moan, but the law just took and now we look back and think "Wow - we smoked inside? Ugh!"
