Hi guys,

There's a shop here in Singapore selling a Wharfedale package which consists of:
1 pair of Wharfedale Titan 12 Active +
1 Wharfedale R1604 Mixer +
3 microphones +
cables and stands
for under US$1000.

Only thing is they don't allow to audition unless ready to buy. Has anybody used or auditioned the above setup before?

Usage is mostly for a function room activites which would be a mix of house music and karaoke application. Knowing it's 12" I'll probably run a sub with it.

Comments please.

Cheers!

I would suggest running like hell.

I own wharfdale speakers they are the evpx active speakers. The titan I believe are the plastic case whereas the ones I have are heavy and carpeted and 15inch.

Contrary to the idiot who doesnt know what he is talking about, wharfedales, made in England are exceptionally good value for money. It took me a while to get used to the sound as the first time I heard it I thought it was muddy...but with some tweaking of eq it was fine and we have never stopped getting gigs since we have had them (almost 3 years now) I dont know about the mixer.
Even here in NZ Wharfedale products are realitively inexpensive, but the only thing I would change about my speakers is the weight. They are simply too heavy for me to lug around any longer.
My suggestion is to find someone who will let you test them so you can decide. You may wish to test the speakers with a different mixer too, maybe a yamaha or something. But I cannot fault my speakers, they are workhorses and the jerk who says run like hell doesnt know he (@$%&#!) from his elbow, and I doubt that wharfedale is available in USA anyway.
We have just been booked for a wedding and for a national conference next year. I am not a kj I am a singer so the quality of sound is important as the buck stops with me. Countlessly we are told they didnt realise it was a live act it sounded as professional as a CD....to me that is the ultimate compliment when playing background music during a wedding breakfast or conference dinner. Yet when I want to increase the volume ... well lets just say I have never run these speakers anywhere near their full capacity...even outdoors, I havent ever needed to

Oh and the main act I have booked for this years dine and dances at the hotel I work for, they use wharfedales as well (they also have a couple of wharfedale subs) and he will not use anything else.

Wharfdale makes a decent speaker, don't know about their other stuff.
But I have NEVER heard of a store not allowing you hear something before you buy, that would make me find another store. Something isn't right there. Most if not all the stores i've ever worked with will be happy to set up a system to audition, even compare to higher end systems to show the differences in sound - often times that's a good selling point in itself.

Thanks guys!

With regards to the shop, they only have a piece on display hence they'll have to pull it out from the warehouse to setup. I guess you could walk away if you don't like the results of the audition, but, there'll be a lot of nasty staring going to happen. I guess that's just the way it is back here :(

Any more comments.

Another model that's on sale is the SPV15P, a powered 15" from Wharfdale too. I wonder if that's more similar to the one you're using MorganLeFey

evp15x is the model I have, sorry if I quoted the wrong one.

yeah Lonnie they are decent speakers. For the money there is nothing to beat them. You can get two powered 15 inch for less than you would pay for 1 JBL. But hells teeth they are heavy. Not so bad since I got the hydraulic stands...now I lie them down put the stands in then walk them upright...same to take them down.
Still doesn help me put them in the car and take em out again.

Wharfedale is a well respected company, in fact, it's one of the biggest speaker manufacture in the world. Their headquarters are in the UK but the factory in Asia (China) for the reason we all know... They make for many other brands you would see on the market. I own a pair of their famous Diamond 8.2 active studio monitors, they sell for almost 60% less then a Mackie and are just has good, just difficult to find in Canada though:roll:

One of the reason we don't see them in many stores are due to their low cost, they could really hurt the competition and the stores usually prefer selling something more expensive! I had to pick up my pair directly at the Canadian distributor, no one had in stock, they were too cheap  BTW, these monitors replaced my previous Behringer Truth which I had paid more, day and night the difference :!:

Hi Vicki,

I'm fine, I can finally start recording again :D I'd say I'm done with buying cdg's, I have more then I can take  It's sometimes funny to read some comments in here, some people just think they know everything  It's ok to express your opinion or experience, but it doesn't mean it's shared by others???

How about you, haven't seen you on SS or perhaps it's me that haven't been there lately

Hugs xx

Great stuff guys! Thanks!

The reason I was considering the mixer too was because it's almost free when I buy the package. The package price is almost the same if I buy the pair of speakers on it's own.

Anybody used Wharfedale mixers out there?

Not to stir up any dust here, but I took it to mean that if you can't try it until you buy....run like hell. I didn't think it was a jab at the manu. at all.

Well, you might be right, but it's still OK to give some explanation like Lonnie did

No that is exactly what he meant & that's my opinion as well. If they have to break it out of a factory to let you audition ONLY on the premise that you are going to buy it, I would find somewhere else to buy from. If they have a liberal return policy, I might go for it possibly.

My guess is that Wharfedale don't make mixers and simply buy them from an Asian company, so, I would expect similar quality to a Behringer which is probably a good deal

I assume my stalker has made some sort of comment about me. (I have set up GreaseMonkey on Firefox to wipe out posts from certain users -- I don't see them at all. So I won't know unless someone references it.)

If I was going to diss Wharfedale, I would do it explicitly. Since I trimmed the quote to show only the sentence about auditioning only when you are ready to buy, I thought it was clear I wasn't talking about the brand. But I guess it wasn't clear enough for some, or perhaps somebody saw an opportunity to take a shot at me. I don't get it, but I don't really care either. I am not here to indulge in gossip about or criticism of another. I certainly express my opinion, but that is all anybody here does. Do I have tons of experience? Maybe not. But I do know that some have 20 years of experience and some have one year of experience twenty times over. 8-)

Hi guys,

You'll have to understand how land scarce Singapore is. most shops is just 5m by 10m of floor space. This only allows them to display their more sellable items, the rest they'll keep at a warehouse were rent is cheaper. Shops here are rented at a 'per square feet' so instead of storing bulky items, they display mostly their best sellers and display minimally on the bulky items. The shop that I was referring to is basically a musical instrrument shop, they squeezed a lot of guitars, picks, drumsticks in the shop and have posters of other items which simply wouldn't fit inm the showroom.

I've been to US and Canada and was amazed how big shops were. I think that's why they could afford to have everything on display and audition on the fly.

Sorry if I caused any confusion here.

Someone suggested to me that my speakers would sound a whole lot better if I invested in a good mixer. I had always thought that mixers were mixers...but a friend of mine suggested I try a yamaha and to be honest its made a world of difference...so I would recommend getting the best mixer you can afford. I havent used the Wharfedale mixer or their mics.

thanks for the suggestions. I'll hook up a Yamaha MG124CX to the SPV15P or the Titan 12 and see how it goes. I hope I'm happy with the sound so there'll be no bad scenes if I don't want to buy neither.

Cheers!
