I am interested in getting a "scattering" of curring pop songs in Spanish. Anyone have ideas which companies do a good job with Spanish language karaoke. I know Sound Choice hase a spanish line, it it up to their regular standard?

Generally I am interested in getting a few relatively current hits (maybe only 200-300) songs for now.

Like most places in the US we have a lot of local Hispanics and while I don't want to exactly target them as my main audience, I want them to feel welcome.

There are 3 types of Spanish music. Mariachi which consists of the older songs including classics. Then there is new mexico which newer younger bands that play the most of the old instruments yet rocks in a newer style. Then there is tejano which uses the squeeze box of german bands and plays a more polka type of music which developed out of Texas.

Here is my spanish list for karaoke Some are Sound choice but mainly a combination of brands that titles were requested..

I like the list above! I have just started collecting latin music so am no expert but here are a few of my experiences--I tend toward Tropical Zone-Latin Stars, although they can have some midi-sounding tracks mixed in with some good ones--you need to preview, if possible. If I recall correctly, the Teen Pack songs are more midi than the same versions on just Latin Stars. Usually that brand is the only choice for some songs, however, or the better choice. (Sound Choice has only one or two of Shakira, for instance.)

I have only one Multi-karaoke that I got for the Ricky Martin duet "Tu Recuerdes." They appear to have taken the backing straight off of the MTV unplugged show as it has applause in it--very jarring. So it's good instrumentation but????? The color changes on the duet get sort of confusing , also, but that could be because the two singers have different parts at the same time. I previewed some other Multi songs for Las Mananitas (have to have that one for birthdays) and Alla En El Rancho Grande and they had all of these "Aiyees" going on in the background that seemed almost insulting. I went with Sound Choice on those two as they had a straightforward Mariachi band playing and the sound wasn't muddy. I would probably pick them as first choice on most everything if they had a larger catalog--if there is any instrument that is going to hurt my ears if done poorly, its trumpets, so a good brand on Mariachi is a must.

Haven't tried the Chartbusters yet but I know their version of Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" is a bit MIDI. But I have yet to find the "ultimate" version of that one on anything.

There are MANY more types of spanish music than just the 3 listed above.

Around LA and California a BIG BIG one is called "BANDA"--which is like a big band type arrangement which is mostly ballads or 'BALLADOS".

There is SALSA--a huge DANCE type style with many variations. You will find many salsa dance clubs whereever there is a latin population.

There is MERENQUe--a fast dance style.

Samba, Son, Mambo, Cumbia are all latin dance types.

TEXMEX is hugely popular.

MUST ALSO INCLUDE Latin/Mexican ROCK. Which is just that--hard rock in Spanish--and that includes all kinds of styles of rock.

And you MUST NOT forget---REGGAETON.........latin hip-hop which is HUGELY popular with with young latinos and has produced some hugely successful stars such as DADDY YANKEE, PITBULL and Tego Calderon.

Also dont forget ballados(Ballads) and Exitos(hits).

If your going to have a REAL selection to offer Latin singers you better have some of each!

As to Karaoke Brands----I like Multi-Karaoke and the old Pioneer Lasers PKL-501 and PKL-502. But there are MANY brands of Latin Karaoke available besides Soundchoice. In fact Soundchoice is really rather limited in the Latin side of things.

What I would do before dropping a bunch of dough in Latin Karaoke music would be talk to some of your latin singers and ASK them to reccommend some artistis that would REALLY make a good collection instead of just buying stuff blindly from something you probly have little knowledge of.

Latin music is a WHOLE DIFFERENT bag than english music--so better do your research so u dont buy a bunch of stuff that wont get sung.

Yes Kurt I totally agree with you but I thought we were talking Mexican karaoke.. Even at private parties these are the 3 main categories that are requested. I think yours fall into the 3 main ones. I have done Mexican night clubs.

Dont tell me we have an argument goin' again!!!!

I think Kurt's advice was excellent, especially about asking the venue what songs/artists to get before you spend the money. I already posted this on another thread but I was about to blow around $100 buying a Latin Music clollection because we are courting a job at a Mexican Restaurant/Bar. But when I asked the owner if there would be a demand for it, she wanted to market more to the local steak eating cowboys and mainly wanted "American" country and pop with maybe a few of the Latin stars that Americans would recognize--Shakira, Ricky Martin, Enrique Eglesias, Marc Anthony, etc. I bought some songs anyway because I like them myself but talking first to the owner, as Kurt suggests, saved me a lot of money (plus you don't come off as trying to be an expert on something outside of your realm).

Most of the people I know who frequent Latin/Hispanic karaoke bars swear by Tropical Zone for their music. This mfr. seems to get the same sort of press as SC and Zoom, except it's Spanish. The few (maybe 15) I have are VERY good.


If you can find it, Music Maestro put out a 4 or 5 disc set that was ok for the older spanish speaking crowd....

Nahhh no argument----jsut he has to be AWARE of all the diferent parts of it. His custies may want other than ONLY Mexican music. Escpecially Salsa and Merenque and REGGAETON.

My orientation is that I DJ at a place that has a big-time SALSA dance club downstairs(two clubs in one) and I Salsa DJ from time to time. So thats where I learned about it and where Im coming from.

And on my trip to LA in August I learned about "BANDA" music from watching it on the Mexican TV music video channel and asking some local Mexican guys about it. I particlulaly like the very formal Mexican band suits/outfits they wear on stage and playing the bass drum without sticks or footpedals---by hand---like playing a conga drum.
