"Karaoke - Sing for Money and prizes"

Now that would get my attention ! You could do a raffle giving singers raffle tickets or play some games for prizes. I don't care how loyal I was to the guy across the street, I'd have to go check it out.

Lon, the question is more hypothetical - I know there are some KARAOKE bars in the area and my point was IF the singers are satisfied there ..it may be near impossible to "get them to cross the street" without maybe a GIMMICK or enticement of some kind. OF COURSE if the KJ 's and selection and sound at the other bars were horrible , people will naturally cross the street for something better.

I think if the bar advertises NEW KARAOKE SHOW where you can SING MORE it may entice people to try it out ..until it gets BUSY and then you know what happens

Babs

I might have to try the naked karaoke thing ......just not when the kitchen is open

It may have been hypothetical, however that was an answer from 1 singers point of view - mine. :)
If I liked where I was, it wouldn't matter if I got to sing more - that is not the all out reason I go out to karaoke anymore, I know the good places you aren't going to be able to sing as much.
Again unless all things being equal or better, then I wouldn't go to another place. What I would look at as a singer - how do the places that I currently like compare, comfort, atmosphere, sound/selection, host personality, the way they run the rotation (do you insert new singers (preferred by me) or do you you use another method where I may have to wait through an entire block of new singers - avoided by me), drink prices/pours, etc. with this new show. I know the place I go I can get a GOOD drink for a reasonable price, I know I am going to sound good over a kickin system, I know they have the songs I want or will get them if requested, I know the crowd. Am I going to get the same at the new show?
I may be the only one who looks for specific things, but if I like a current club, not much is going to make me move to another. Check it out, maybe.

Best thing to do again is to get outside banners/signs outside advertising the karaoke. Get an ad in the local paper nightlife section or if you have a local karaoke paper, put an ad in there as well with either a drink coupon or a discount when the ad is mentioned.

Send all your "badddd" singers across the street!!! LOL

Lon has it right! Upfront you have to promote, promote, promote!!! All things being equal, I want to sing for an appreciative crowd, in a place that I feel comfortable, and have someone serving me that I didn't even know I only sung twice in 4 Hrs!!!

Besides KS is there any web based LISTS of SHOWS, there used to be few but the ones I knew of are all closed.....

Try advertising in www.craigslist.org . The drawback to this is that you have to keep re-listing it every week.

As for your scenario, I'm not sure what would get me to go across the street to check out a new show on the same night (and time). If I'm settled in to one place as a Regular, I don't like to go elsewhere. I do like to occasionally check out other shows and different crowds (and have traveled as much as 90 miles away to do so), but that is only once in a while. There are some shows held on the same night which I alternate between. As for a new show starting up on the same night, I probably wouldn't go unless some of my friends heard about it and wanted to go too. Other factors involved have already been mentioned..... type of place (bar vs restaurant), prices, etc...

Original question: What makes me cross the street.

First, if the host has a good rep - and if they're 'better' than the one I'm going to.

Second, how welcome do the regulars in the new place make singers feel? I've walked into places and it's like they all turn around and look, and it feels like daggers!

Third, place has to be clean and staff friendly....not as though I'm bugging them to order something.

Fourth, sound and selection are VERY important but if the above conditions aren't met, not even sound and selection will get me in there. If you have to sit in a place all night, as far as I'm concerned the atmosphere is very important.

Fifth, if the host knows how to run sound...and no games...in other words, no rotation screwing, no resetting sound to less than desirable with certain singers (i've seen this happen SO many times - automatic 'don't go back' with me).

And finally, if I'm new to a place, I really like to see the host come over and introduce themselves and establish rapport. If I feel like they give a darn that I'm there, there's a good chance I'll go back. Conversely, if I'm new at a place and they make absolutely NO effort to make me feel welcome, adios....
