Has anyone ever tried building powered speakers with class-d circuits?

I looked into a Hypex module but couldn't find a switch-mode power supply to use with it. There are some packaged devices that will go up to about 50W if I remember correctly. These don't usually require a heat sink. Using neodymium speaker drivers would lessen the weight and the response corrections could be made from outboard gear or simply from an input preamp processor. This would be ideal for the karaoke host. I see a lot more hosts using laptops. I'm wondering if a usb or firewire interface can be used for mic inputs. There would be no racks, amps or heavy speakers to lug. Anyone game?

The karaoke sound business is such a niche market in comparison to mainstream audio. I don't feel it has been given a fair shake when big audio companies develop their products. I had considered developing audio gear exclusively for the KJ but with more advanced technology that is readily available and user serviceable and better yet, of greater value to the KJ. I anticipate strides in the audio industry toward this trend but not necessarily specific to the KJ.

What are your thoughts?

JD with an engineering degree I am a hacker with with many years experience in extending the power on CB radios or any other transmitting device. I can design with class a components for 99% reliability or using class b or flaky components offer the typical products from China now. I can design with worse case conditions or using maybe it will work and last more than 6 months parameters. I am not familiar with the class D moniker. There are IC components readily available from far East sources that are class A and are used to extend the reliabilty or or quality of consumer products. This is a secret of the few techs or hackers that are left.. I have modified stock cars for maximum performance and I can do the same for any electronic product. I charge 40 Million dollars/hour

I usually do that with a bunch of 4CX250B's or a 8877! They are good enough to make the street lights blink

Edit: Lovely to see other RF hobbyists here.

I figured the Karaokescene tech forum would be a good place to network for tech types that may be interested in developing powered speakers exclusively for karaoke use. Keeping it in an open forum would greatly benefit the KJ community.

Of course finding available cost effective and reliable resources would be the ticket.

A good intro for Class-D amps can be found on wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switching_amplifier

Here's one on International Rectifier's site: http://www.irf.com/technical-info/appnotes/an-1071.pdf

Take a look at Hypex: http://www.hypex.nl/docs/UcD2kOEM_datasheet.pdf
They have a Class-D 2000W amp module which can be used used for a woofer or sub. Depending on how much power needed they also have a few other modules that can be used for mid and highs.

The second note here is using a switchmode power supplies. This will eliminate the use of heavy transformers.

Thirdly if check here you'll see an 18" sub rated at 2000 Watts continuous weighing in at a mere 9.3 pounds: http://www.bcspeakers.com/product.php?id=0000000070
They make other light weight drivers as well.

All these features will tremendously reduce weight and size not to mention a reduction in power use as well increased efficiency which are of great value to KJ.

It's been a while since I chased this endeavor. I will hunt around some more to see what's else is out there.

A powered 2000W 18" sub around 65 lbs. Get use to it.

How about producing a 2x18" neodymium sub w/2 separate 2kwatt class-d amps (w/switch-mode power supply) about 80 lbs total. I'll be your first customer and you'll make way more than 2M the first year.
