I sing & play keyboards in a duo with a woman. I use a Dell laptop with backing tracks in mp3 format through Winamp. Works great. But I live in fear of the laptop crashing one night during a gig. Would it be a good idea to transfer the files to a karaoke player that handles mp3s'?? I don't use or need the graphics and I control the sound through the mixer and/or Pro Tools on the laptop. Any ideas???

You can save your mp3 music in 8mb memory stick and use a dvd player that have a usb port as a backup.

Thanks Jian, that should work. I would need either a CD or DVD player with two outputs, hopefully 1/4 phone plugs, to my mixer. Any recommendations??

As most DVD players have RCA out and you are looking for !/4 inputs this is all you would need http://www.zzounds.com/item--HOSCPR20

Thanks RLC, I kind of figured the cables out, but you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge on most DVD players I'm looking into. I don't see anyway of identifying which song I'm playing unles I run the video outs to a monitor screen. What I'm trying to accomplish is to 1) Not bring the laptop and 2) Carry LESS or equal equipment to what I currently use, which is the laptop, and a Mobile Pre usb interface, which then goes to my mixer. A typical Ipod would work, if the screen were large enough to read and I was able to control what would play next. In any event, I don't see any display on DVD players that would at least show a Numerical of what song was playing. And again, I don't know much about these players, took me long enough to figure out Pro Tools!! Thanks!

I think I might have answered my own question here. The flash stick will store files, like my mp3s', but will not, (I think) store a program, like Winamp, which is what I use and need to organize and play the files. So I think my only answer to this would be to purchase a second laptop. If I'm wrong, maybe someone can respond, but if not, thanks to all for any help.

I saw on Soundchoice's website they had a single deck dvd/cdg player with USB that would play any discs you have plus read any mp3+g files on an external harddrive or USB stick up to 9,999 songs for 179.99. I dont know how good it is but that seems cool.

I just bought a new player for my wife for Christmas. It is a Philips 851/37, a portable DVD player which has an 8.5" screen. It also plays:

CDG
VCD
CDs (and DVDs) with MP3 files
CDs (and DVDs) with JPEG files

It has a SD memory card slot as well, which I haven't tried. It does not recognize MP3+G -- I tried.

She will use it for carrying tunes to voice lessons, so she can see the words to songs she is practicing. She will undoubtedly also use it for showing pictures. Maybe even for watching movies. 8-)

I hope to also use it as a show player for CDGs -- if that works I will look for another. People who bring in CDGs will be able to see the words on it, without having to add video capture for Compuhost.
