I got a few discs the other day from ebay that arrived yesterday. They are SGB.I found it odd that they were orange and white and some of the graphics don't look quite right.I already have several SGB discs and they are all yellow and black. What got me wondering more than anything else is,i already had one of the discs, same number, song etc and yes it is yellow/black not orange/white.
Is there any way to tell? They seem to play ok but they just seem off.Like the tempo is not quite right, they sound pretty close to the song but theres just something that doesn't feel quite right.Don't know how to explain it any better.
If they are bootlegs, they must have a pretty nice labeling system because other than some odd looking graphic they look pretty professional.
Sorry if i'm bringing up a dead horse,i tried searching the forums but the search function here didn't seem to be of any help.

If you did receive COPIES of originals cdg's - I don't see why the sound or graphics would be any different ?

I dealt with someone not too long ago that was BLATANTLY selling copies... but she or he claimed that those were the very discs they bought from a KJ that sold his collection to them, and they were merely trying to recoup their investment.

But when I complained it was a copy, they repaid my paypal almost immediately.

I had a thread on here, about avoiding them.

...pulls out SGB set...

I bought this as a set several years ago from karaoke.com... a reputable store. The discs don't all look the same. 22,32,44,45, and 63 are all different. Some are blue on white, some white on blue, and one (32) neon yellow!

Don't know if that helps.

And hey there are some good cuts in there. I personally sing several SGB things... "Working For The Weekend", for one. It just slams.

The only SGB I have 1 is blue, 1 Black & 1 gold. Only have these because someone gave them to me. Wouldn't waste my own money on them.

ANYONE selling SGB as new is selling copies. SGB has been out of business for 3 or 4 years- AT LEAST.

They were one of the first companies to close their doors when the licensing crackdown began. Almost NONE of their tracks were licensed, and they didn't feel like paying the ripoff artist groups ( who rip off the artists) a fee.

In this particular case of bootlegging, no royalties were lost for the artists (they weren't getting anything anyway), and since SGB is out of business, no income was lost to the industry. I wouldn't worry about it much. Almost every SGB set bought in the last few years is counterfeit.

The same can be said for the Dangerous series as well as several others.

Hmmm... I wonder if this is why mine came with no documentation. I remember when I added them to the books, and this is before I had the computer, I had to read the track info off each disc.

There's a higher ratio of bad to good tracks in SGB than any other brand I can think of. But when I bought mine I needed a lot of things in a hurry. It's paid for itself. And I still use the set for some things because SGB did a particularly good job on some tracks.

Like all brands there are good tracks, and bad, and ugly. But I sure wouldn't suggest getting SGB if you have this stuff elsewhere.

I wonder WHO is making the copies. They aren't just an E-Bay thing--almost every major karaoke store has them including Ace and Express. My boyfriend thinks that the white and blue label ones somehow sound less worse than the orange and white labels. Must admit we have a set and people choose songs from them every time. Either I am getting used to them or the boyfriend has some trick to mixing them but they don't sound so bad to me anymore. It was a dirt cheap way to get a huge variety of songs and now we know what to buy more of or replace.

Sweet Georgia Brown, All Hits, the old Mega Hits, Helluvadisc, and a couple others are pretty much all in the same. They just change their name every few years.

Good labeling systems are easy. I use Acoustica for my backups, though only black print on white because they ARE backups. However, with this software you can make labels indistinguishable from the real thing. I can put any graphic, photo, or anything I can scan into the PC on the label. Simply the best AND easiest.

One way of verifying authenticity of a disc is to look at the rim of the hole in the middle. There should be a code stamped in the plastic. Though there are some counterfeits that add this touch, if it's NOT there you can be SURE it's counterfeit.

This is true, a store may have been closing out their stock & someone bought them up. I bought a couple hundred SC discs off of E-Bay for $4 per. They were all new & legit discs.

Mine are predominantly black and gold. The freestyle jazz SGB are great (first 3 in the set I believe). In fact, I'd say they have the best freestyle jazz collection of anyone for the price. The rest, don't really use them unless there is no other choice. I picked most of them up DIRT cheap on E-Bay years ago.

Yup, the Jazz alone is almost worth the cheap collection price. I bought mine at a local brick and mortar karaoke store about 5 years ago.

The first 66 discs were black and gold. The Toolbox was purple and white. They all have the code stamp in the center, but like I said, these CAN be faked, so who knows?
