Well, I was born in Canyon Lake, kind of a resort town in Texas (on the outskirts of New Braunfels)[/quote]

How long has it been since you've been back to Canyon Lake?
You would never even recognize the place now. Not really a resort town more of a High Class Richy place with lots of million dollar homes and most of those ranches have been sold off and subsidized into 5 to 10 acre lots for those million dollar homes.

Now what years were you in TX again Charmin? You were there with your mom and dad then later with your own family right?

We didnt have electricity until I was 9 years old. The last mile of the phone line was barb wire fence and the numbers were 3 digits. I have spent many hours in the cold splitting firewood for the cooking stove and fireplace. As a kid it was nothing to ride a horse a few dozen miles a day. I can process any animal with a pocket knife, cut and wrap for the freezer.

Aim that tater gun at my window I'll put them in the deep fryer. For years Id come home om leave and the old man would have some kind of squabble with a neighbor. The neighbor and I would meet in the bar and sit there and drink and laugh about it.

I was "through" there in 1996, with my husband when we moved to the bay area... but haven't been there to stay since, umm, guess it was around 1981 (i was 13, lordie what a long time ago that was) :D

My grandpa was the caretaker/groundskeeper of Canyon Lake, as a kid I used to go with him a lot on his daily rounds.. and he lived above the lake on a horse ranch owned by my uncle. My uncle passed away just a couple of years ago, and as far as I know my aunt and cousin are still there on the ranch.
But... it's been years since I myself was there. My mom was there a couple years ago, and my brother has been there too. (he just lives in Gatesville, so it's not much of a drive for him) I'm always wanting to go, but, my husband hates what he saw of Texas and wont go with me. :( A band I sang with a couple years ago split up because the lady who was the "main member" met a guy (online, of all things) and moved to New Braunfels to be with him. So she gigs there part time and works at a hair salon there and when she comes to visit she brings me New Braunfels souvenirs... so that's as close as I get to NB these days.

You must live close to there?

Lonnie and I moved to the Dayton area... a bit north of Galveston. Not near close enough to New Braunfels:)

I'm in San Antonio but get up to the lake every once in a while and used to love tubing down the Guadalupe but it's gotten so crowded and all the restrictions that they have put on the tubers it's no fun anymore.

I'm guessing that your hubby must have seen the bad parts of Texas (which of course most of it is) and didn't get to the good parts (don't know where that is either) , me I kinda got stuck here after the military got through with me been here since 81 and just can't find a way out. Would love to move back to NW somewhere around Great Falls or Spokane but the wife can't take the cold.

Oh, yeah, tubing down the Guadalupe was about ALL my cousins talked about in the summer:) We used to go up to Wimberley and swim at the Blue Hole. (geez, that seems like eons ago)

I guess all small towns change tho, kinda sad if you ask me. The cattle ranch my family moved to here in Yoder Oregon is still EXACTLY the same as it was when we first moved there. Strange, it's mostly all new people, but the same ancient little backwoods store and lumber mill are all that's still there... the same as 20+ years ago. I'll literally cry the day that store goes ba-bye.

Yup, that is the one. It is still exactly the same as it's always been. Quaint looking little place... our cattle ranch was about a 1/2 mile up the road from there on Schneider Rd.

No, I was pretty young when we left Texas, so I only went on "family outings" while there. My skinnydipping episodes were done in the Feather River in Loma Rica, California, and up here in the Clackamas River;) Wagon Wheel park in Molalla Oregon (right up the road) used to be a hangout for the same type of crowd.... nekkid hippies. :D
