Hey guys, just a quick question/hijack if you don't mind. I have an old PC that was upgraded for karaoke, Sounblaster Platinum Pro soundcard, 320 gig harddrive, upgraded video card, and new DVD burner etc.. Never thought about putting everything in a rack though, can I do that by changing out the case? If so, what do I buy, and where can I buy it?

I converted my desktop to a rackomount before my shoulder started acting up. Got the rackmount case from Ebay and transfered the desktop over to the rackmount case.

Ron I could give you a detailed seminar on converting but Id rec sticking with a tower. First considerations are 2v unit 3 unit? Weight..Is it too long to fit in rack. Which 90 degree PC risers are best?

I have a 2 unit case Id give you which I have cut the length down to 17.5 " but have no idea what the shipping would be.

Do you remember roughly what it cost you Danny, and how do you like it?

I personally really like the idea of that since you keep all the positive attributes of a pc, but yet simplify the portability a great deal by going to a rack mount. I have nothing against laptops either as I have 3 but my pc has better componets. Ron

I was starting to like the idea Ollie until I read your post,lol.

I might look into building my own rack also, and then I can make it accomodate whatever (within reason). As a machinist, fabricator/welder that could be a fun project for me. .....Ron

Have experience there also. DO NOT use 3/4" particle board. I built a case I couldnt lift into the vam mt. ROLF use 1/4" plywood or fiber glass. The one I made had a foldup for an lcd screen and all. It turned into a casket.. .

You can get the rails and cut for various lengths. Get a case of beer and we will build something...

Server and audio racks are the same size and have the same spacing for screws. This is a simple case that you can mount into a standard 19" rack:

I got one just like this at Fry's for $70 without power supply, you already have one for your tower setup. You just take all the guts from your tower system and put it in this style case. Takes up 4 spaces on your audio rack.

I mounted a set of USB ports on the inside of the rack and mounted my Compuhost dongle on the inside and secured it with zip ties. No worries about a lost dongle.

I was thinking along the lines of aluminum sheetmetal Ollie. It's light, strong, and disapates heat well. Plus I can sheer it, bend it, heliarc it or whatever else I need to do. Sometimes it's not practical to build things like this, unless you can't buy exactly what you want, or if the price is so high to where it would make sense to build your own. If I do decide to do so, I should start a thread on the subject to solicit ideas for the "ultimate rack", such as size, storage space, easy connections, fold up monitor etc. They did post a few really nice ones a while back in here. Shoot, I'm hijacking again, let me get outa here, sorry op.
