I'm twochords....obviously my 1st post here.
I'm a 43yr old, single father of 2(daughters 8 & 10yrs old) and I reside in Pa.. I've been vocally involved since the age of 8. I'm a natural tenor, but I stray into the baritone range. I can read music, but I lack perfect pitch. My experience includes various choral groups, studio work(mostly backing stuff), and numerous on-stage performances. But, in all honesty, my karaoke experience is somewhat limited.
Many years ago, my (now ex)Wife and I did 'Video Killed the Radio Star'[The Buggles] as a spur-of-the-moment performance while hanging at a karaoke bar. It went over well, so later that week we added her sister, polished the 3-part harmony and went back the following weekend. Having the blended voices of the sisters behind me really made it sound nice... it was fun too!
In 2007 I was vacationing with my family at a resort in the Dominican Republic. During 'Karaoke Night', I was pressured by some family members to submit my name to sing. I picked 'Brilliant Disguise'[Bruce Springsteen], a song that had never sung in front of anyone before. And with as much rehearsal time as I could gather(which was 5min in a nearby men's room), I took the stage to an audience of ~300. Despite the shabby performance, I still managed to get a roar from the mostly European crowd(much to my surprise).
Well, I'm taking my family back to that same resort in a few weeks, except this time I'll be a little better prepared. I've been working on several songs since December. Originally, I was concentrating on 2 Morrissey tunes('The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get' and 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys'), but I've recently decided to go back to "Bruce". 'Girls in Their Summer Clothes' seems to fit in my range comfortably. It gets hairy during the bridge, but I've been able maintain diaphragm function during practice. My primary concern is that its almost 4.5min long with lyrics throughout(no instrumental solos/breaks), so the breathing alone is a challenge. My current plans are to polish it up and try it out locally before I go on the trip. Time will tell.
Anyway, thanx for reading my long intro...I look forward to familiarizing myself to the ways of Karaoke from you.
