Thankfully we don't get the first three where I live. AP and PBTDL never at my shows, because they aren't in my book or on my 'puter.
We got so sick of Total Eclipse that we sabotaged our copy for a few weeks just to get a break. It's back now.

I have to leave the bar during any singing of "MY HEART WILL GO ON" by Celine Dion. I can't stand "LOVE SHACK" by B-52s either.
I'm quickly becoming tired of "GUNPOWDER AND LEAD" by Miranda Lambert, which was done 4 times during my Wednesday night show.

I consider myself very lucky because I don't have many of these problem songs sung much. One guy would very occasionally sing Hey Jude but always bowed out of the ending. I've never had American Pie sung, but if I ever do on a regular basis I'll pull it just like I did PBDL. It is so long and boring.
Only one woman has ever done My Heart Will Go On and not very often. And usually close to the end of the night when she's getting weepy so no big deal.
Dixie Chicks have to stay. The whole room joins in. And they're short and harmless.
If I ever pulled Total Eclipse I'd be lynched by the room. By necessity it's there forever.
My main problem songs for length are Master Of Puppets and Aenima. I just tell them "after one guys."

Thank goodness that one seems to be burned out here. I have only been around karaoke for 3-1/2 years, but I can see that songs come and go. That one, for right now, is gone.

Re "My Heart Will Go On"
Legends has a dance version of that with a disco beat. It is a bit liviler if you could convince someone to try it.
We still get David Allen Coe almost weekly in our neck of the desert. Too bad we can't change it up with the Steve Goodman version that has the dog getting run over on Christmas Eve.

Of course, the "Most Hated" often depend on geography which has a bearing on what the poster has been exposed to.
I remember in a similar thread a couple of years back several people "out west" included "Bohemian Rhapsody" among there most hated while being more receptive towards PBTDL. People from the mid-west to the east coast were more annoyed by PBTDL. Nonetheless, PBTDL, goes over pretty well in FL and rarely has "Bohemian Rhapsody" been done here.
As to PBTDL, I haven't heard it in awhile. When done, the level of performance is usually "acceptable" to "very good". The last time I heard it done was when I had my show last spring. A couple of tourists from out of town, just nailed it and their "antics" were enjoyable as well.
As to "Never Even Call Me By My Name" and "American Pie", they go over very, very well in S FL, particularly when approached as "sing-a-longs"!
I used to have "Picture" near the top of my "hate list" until I heard two lesbians nail it just a few weeks ago. It was quite good!
As for my CURRENT "hate list", generally speaking, it includes any long-winded rap number, with "Rapper's Delight" at the top - 7 1/2 minutes of sheer boredom, usually sung by somebody who thinks they are 'IT'! Although I have never done this before, I am considering taking the track permanently out of my catalog!

I personally love the song. Course the only person I've heard do it, COULD do it, and nailed it. I know I'd never try! !
But then again, I think this goes along with the older thread of "do you want your singers to practice"... hey, if it's a difficult song, do us a favor and TRY it at home first! !

Well, I would rank "American Pie" as one of those song that is wrong for karaoke on several levels, and I really like, but hate to see done.
First, its 8 minutes long, which on a busy karaoke nite is rude to begin with. Second, if the singer sucks, its 8 full minutes of sucking.
The song is not all that challenging vocally, but it has many rhythm changes and this seems to foul up many singers.
Its funny, because last night I kept getting requests from folks to sing the song.
"That's a long song, I don't really want to do that one." And I really don't.... that's too much KJ singing time, "You do it!"
"No, no! We really want YOU to do it. You sing so nice."
Apparently, an older lady (whom I've seen in the bar many times) wanted it done.... its going to be sund at her funneral she was very happy to tell me.
Anyway, towards the end of the night, as things slowed, and more people kept promting me to do it (and several folks had bought me drinks ) I figured... what the hey, if that's what they wanna hear who am I to say no?
So I got the bar to sing the chorus with me.... and the whole bar actually did....
It was pretty amazing... everybody was dancing, raising their glasses, smiling, singing along.... and my tip jar got filled!
and at the end we were all standing shoulder to shoulder, swaying, glasses raised"... and this'll be the day that I die..." Pretty wonderful warm fuzzy moment and a little heady
Very interesting moment. Just goes to show... while there are songs we may hate to hear... a lot of times, the "folks" are having fun hearing it regardless. In the end, that all that matters.

Matt,
Actually... I have never heard "Rapper's Delight" done poorly; it's usually done by someone who knows it by heart.
So.. to me..... it's simply a matter of boredom. I have "tried" to listen to the words, I still don't know the story is that is being portrayed! The song has wasted 7.5 minutes of my life during which I could listen to 2-3 great country songs, each of which would probably tell a great tale -- or to PBTDL which tells an ironic story about life that many have experienced first hand, but all have not necessarily learned from! I guess you have to be at least on your second marriage? Oh well, to each his own!
