I'm certainly not a fan of rap "music" as "they" call it... My opinion is that it is not music per se, it is simply (and usually) very bad poetry to a very bad beat.

But, getting back to the point of the thread, I don't think it's a question that I could answer because I can't pick a song for anyone to sing for the fact that I have no idea what types of music they know.

As as KJ, I can always suggest "group songs"... Beatles, Motown, etc... or some "plain vanilla easy-to-mimmic artists" like Elvis, Sinatra or Patsy Cline.

But that woud be pretty much the extent of it. I'm not their personal musical consultant, it's too subjective. It's like doing a DJ job when the dance floor is full and one person comes up and says;

"Can you play something good?"

DJ: "What would you like?"

"I dunno... just something good."

DJ: "Can you name a song or artist?"

"No, just something other than this."

This doesn't give the DJ anyway to satisfy this person and because of its subjectivity, anything the DJ picks will be wrong.

So, the answer is no, I don't pick songs for singers....

I don't think picking songs for the singers is a requirement but I see the ability to do so as an asset--especially if people are in a rut week after week and they ask you for a suggestion. Opportunity is knocking.

And I don't think the fact that some people don't like a song means it can't be someone else's favorite. I think most of my boyfriend's songs are sappy and he thinks mine are obnoxious. Doesn't mean we don't sing them anyway. On purpose.....

An instance would be "Proud Mary" (creedance version) which seems to be a good beginner song. My boyfriend never liked it but I'll dance to that guitar whether the song is butchered or nailed.

There, I named a suggestion, back on track.

Compuhost makes it easy. Go to their history, and pick something they've done farther in the past (though not too far). If they complain about what you pick, print them out a list of their history and give it to them.

Guys almost always sing what they want. But I have several ladies who ask me what they should sing... out of what they already do of course. One in particular - and she's so cute - will phrase it like this: "Your opinion is important to me."

My usual response is "Me?!?" But I'll usually grab something and say "OK try this."

And she does good stuff too so it's tough.

I agree that the ability to assist someone in selecting a song is an asset for a KJ.

And, as Bill has found, I get more such requests from females than males, while there are typically more male singers than female!

Reading the thread about most hated Karaoke songs I noticed many people saying that its not so much the songs that they hate, but the songs that are butchered!

This is fair enough! But what songs would people suggest for singers that want to have fun with a few friends but aren't the most confident singers?

I would recommend they go with a couple of other friends that just want to have fun and find some songs they like that they can sing as a group. Then, when they feel more confident the next time, they can pick a song to do by themselves, if they like. I don't think for those people, that the problem is not knowing what to sing -- it's simply not wanting to be so exposed. It just takes a few times for them to get up the confidence.
