I really don't know for sure on the durability of a drive. It seems to me though any drive should be able to handle the use of a song every now and then. I mean all of us probably used our drives when we ripped all of our songs to the computer in the first place. I know I've been trying to get the 1600 I've got on by this weekend and my drive has been running sometimes 6-8 hours a day.

Hoster does do it & works fine, never had an issue with it.
But agree with most, just get a separate player. For one, it won't wear out your drive in the computer (not that they can't be replaced), & 2 it won't look like your are trying to rip the customer disc to your own library.

FYI: Although MTU claims that playing a disc through their program is a "temporary" function, It is possible to trap and keep any single disc track that it uses to play.

It is also possible to "renumber" your book ID's without having to re-rip the disc either. I have numbered my dk discs with book id's that match the original disc layout so that book id #5601 is still "My Girl" by the Temptations. (dk disc 56, track 1) I did this because after using discs for so many years, I had many of the numbers memorized so now they still match.

I have tried to recall a disc that was done in temporary rip on the fly and have not been able to recreate the song either in the database search or in my song database. I've been using Hoster for almost 4 years now, and never seen that from a temp rip.

You won't find it if you're looking for a single file especially if you're looking for a .kma file because it doesn't really get transformed into a .kma file even though it says it's making one.... It's actually 2 files that you need to store before you play the song after it. One is the RW subcodes (the "graphic") and the other is a wma file. Neither use the proper names or extentions to keep users from finding them. The two files can be recombined to make a burnable track.

It never goes into any database or song folder.

You can test this yourself that hoster is not dependant on the original file by taking an MP3G file and Playing it with hoster directly off a flash drive: As soon as you hit "play" on hoster and you start to see graphics, PULL THE FLASHDRIVE OUT. The program will continue and play the entire song like nothing happened while the flashdrive is sitting comfortably in your hand....

Makes it easy when a customer brings in a flashdrive with an Mp3G... I can start the song and hand them back their drive before the music starts...

(and yes, you can keep the files that played and recombine them later, you simply have to either rename them or move them before you hit "play" for the next song because it will be overwritten with whatever you currently have playing.)

I just looked at that, and my head exploded. That is going to take care of the audio and the video? Compuhost will run the disk???

Looks like you're rerouting the audio and video a second time.

Also, you can't come off the headphone jack (well, ahem, you can... but in all likelyhood the PC's fan noise will be coming through your speakers).

Finally, it requires the use of a USB port. Mine are at a premium as is... I only have three: 1) the CH Dongle, 2) A ball mouse (I hate the laptop mouse), 3) The Audio Interface.

The External Lyrics feature of CH is designed to reroute only the video output of the external player, NOT the audio. That would only degrade the audio signal! Instead you should route the audio signal directly from the player to your mixer. I've used it that way for well over a year with no problems whatsoever.

It's covered in the User's Manual under "Using the External Lyrics Source Feature"

I use a seperate karaoke player that is hooked up with a simple A/B switch that includes video to the mixer. One click and all audio and video is reroutedand uses the same mixer channel too.
