Do any of you use a software player in your computer? I have a venue I am temping at that uses VGA for their projector and makes it impossible to have a player connected to it. Are there any software players that are worth a darn?

I am surprised there isn't a sticky thread about karaoke player software. I will post what I use.
I use RoxBox http://www.roxbox.net/.
* cost $79, demo mode is crippled but you can still see how it works
* uses winamp for playback, installs key / tempo changer
* plays MP3+G in ZIP files or not zipped
* search feature is extremely fast even with a large database
* database import: about 20 file / directory name format choices, and ID3 tags. using ID3 tags is very slow to import but does not affect playback speed.
* singer history is crude but works
* you can create 2 CDG lyric windows, one for your laptop screen and one for the TV
* possible to use built-in cross-fader to play music between karaoke singers, but I have had bad experience with this feature (bugs)
* Windows XP & Vista compatible, read the RoxBox forums to learn how to run the program in "administrator mode" on Vista or you will have problems!
* support forum seems to be fairly active, and the developer has responded to me when I emailed him within a day or two. I do not pay attention to how often new versions come out with bug fixes, etc.

You can get a converter that will take your players RCA video out & convert to VGA.

As far as Software, I use MTU Hoster. Very satisfied, easy to use.

I use Compuhost after testing just about every software out there. All have their pluses but for ME the software that meets my needs is compuhost. I say test all the demos and find the one that meets your needs.

It occurs to me my first post wasn't very succinct in expressing my need. I use Compuhost already to run the show. I don't think there is a better program for my use and methods. My biggest complaint is they don't play CD+G disks from the drive; I have to rip and store them. Not a big deal in general, just a hassle and open to some as piracy.
I'd like a nice utility that simply plays the CD+G off the disk drive just like it were an old fashioned karaoke player. Makes all the wiring and such much simpler if I got rid of the CD player.
So: Is there any software out there that makes your PC a simple CD+G player for running things off disk?
My apologies for being obtuse in the OP.

Siglos Player/Recorder available at powerkaraoke.com. Though I have had trouble with skipping on the playing song on CompuHost if I put the disk in before the previous song has finished, it works fine if you just wait for the previous song to end before pushing in the disk.

As I understand, CH has a part of the program that you can get a video capture card & run an external player for those customer discs.
MTU Hoster plays customer discs - with many drives that aren't even specified cdg compatible. I believe you can get a plug in for Winamp that will play cdg's, but have heard your drive needs to be cdg compatible.

For cd's I use the original player from the Cavs package I first bought to start ripping. It plays files or cd's The cd drive does have to be cdg compatible.
When it loads a cd it lists the track numbers and you click on the track you want. I used bothy th pe and sp player.
Google Cavs-usa..

Is that the one that shows you the entire file name including c:\ instead of showing brand or artist info?

I have MTU Hoster loaded on my laptop. It has a feature that allows playing CDG's and Video Discs.
I have an external Plextor Burner in my case that is always connected via USB for this purpose.

you can set pcdj to show whatever you want for a naming scheme .Much like when ripping cdg you pick the naming convention you want to see.

gryf winamp (free) has a plug in that will play cdg discs (also free I think) so all you need for that is winamp with plug in installed

Apparently their defaults are poor, because every time I see it all you can see for the song type is "F:\\Karaoke\Downlo....." or "F:\\My Download\...."

So if you use KaraFun with Compuhost, do you just hit external from the compuhost screen, then insert the disc in your computer, and the lyrics will work with Compuhost just like you were using an External player??? Sorry, not trying to highjack the thread, but I use Compuhost with an external player (for people with their own discs), but if I don't have to set up a player, then I would just use the KaraFun.

I just minimized Compuhost. Didn't think to try the external bit. I'll experiment a bit more and report my results.
