Received a call from a new bar I sent business cards and a flyer with a one time discount to when I heard of their new business. I am performing there this coming Thursday, they even have my business name and my name on their website. www.onemoreroundrocks.com They want to lock me into a weekly gig and asked me for my logo as Miller Light is making canvas posters for them and one will be for my business. This place was fully remodeled by the owner himself and has never been a bar in the past. It has 2 rooms as it used to be two storefronts. The 2nd just opened and has a large stage, dance floor and a greenroom so I don't have to take my equipment home IF I get the gig. It even has a snake pit in the basement and a countertable set up in the back for the soundman.
Wish me luck! This is a very nice place.

With a venue that seems willing to promote you, and a good setup, I don't think you will need luck, but I wish you good luck anyway. Go get 'em!

Ouch ... we have one of those. We get home at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday mornings...then work as usual all day Tuesday. Been four years and you get used to it...sort of...

There have been times in the last 12 years that we've thought about doing that very thing. I don't know that right now, with the state of the economy, if that would be a wise move, but oh yah, it's tempting.

Well, I was busted down to a production job and litterely took a $33,000 annual cut and pay so I've been kicked around enough. If it wasn't for health insurance,,,, oh that's right, that's why I am moving to Canada SOON!
For now, I'll be happy with my first weekly gig.

Working a full time job and KJing is hard. I basically feel like I have no life at times. I work every Wed, Fri, Sat. So that means my weekends are always taken up, not to mention the lack of sleep. I've been doing it about 5 yrs now. I ponder the thought of working only one job once in a while and then it passes. I figure I might as well make the money while I can. I don't think I can keep up with the lack of sleep when I get older. I have to say what helps a lot is I no longer have to setup and tear down all my equipment. I have a more permanent setup at my regular gig.

The weekend thing is tough alright - I worked a regular weekend gig for two years and finally I realized that there had to be more to my social life than 3-minute socializing (while a song played). I work Fri now only, and have an arrangement to have a sub come in when I want...week nights, although more difficult for me sleep wise, seem to work much better. My weekend gig allowed me to leave a set of equipment there so I walked in, did the show, walked out...setting up and tearing down is a grind, and definitely influences what I charge for a show. Being computerized and having active speakers really helps that part of it.

Wierd thing I've found from only being able to have those three minute conversations like Karen said is I have litlle patience now in my life for longer conversations. It's like I'm conditioned to have short conversations.
We had a family party Sunday and I found myself not wanting to talk, but just sit and listen. I think it's because when I'm working I'm the host and need to make sure everyones having a good time and entertained. In our job we need to be outgoing and social. On my days off I want to be the opposite. I'm perfectly happy to sit back and be a wall flower.

Ripman, two things. Does the bar owner actually own the building or lease. If he is leasing and this is a new bar, I'd be concerned about leaving your equipment there, in case he gets behind in his rent and they seize the business.
Second, you will need medical insurance in Canada, perhaps not as expensive but plans for medical/dental go from $100/month for some government to $200+ for private, depending on the company you work for, if they even offer it.

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure if he owns or leases.
Why will I need to purchase insurance? I will be sponsored by my wife?
