What handling noise? During the song they're singing and the music is cranking. Song over -> mic volume turned off -> fill music up.

Perhaps if someone was singing a ballad in a quiet room and the mic was all the way up you'd hear the mic being handled. But those are extraordinary circumstances.

I hear it -- I am not deaf. Sang through two again on my last trip. Terrible mics.

BUY CHEAP - GET CHEAP. I've been to shows that use cheap mics. I just don't go back. Microphones are not the area where a KJ should try to cut corners.

I didn't mean to sound so negative toward singers requests, but in my experience the singer that usually asks for a lot of reverb preferences it with something that makes me think they want it for the wrong reasons. Like: I'm trying this song for the first time or I'm not a very good singer. They believe if I bury them in effects it makes them sound better. I have one guy that asks for a lot of reverb on every song. I'm not going to put a lot of reverb on a fast country song.

I'm sure there are singers out there that actually know what they're talking about and I should keep an open mind to that. It's just the majority of people don't know anything about equipment and settings.

I actually let one of my regulars mess with my settings because he bragged about doing the sound for House of Blues. I thought cool maybe I could learn something from a professional. I ended up with horrible feedback issues and literally had to kick him off stage. The more he tried to stop the feedback the worse it got.

Babs, thanks for having an open mind and not going on the defensive. I wasn't trying to single anyone out and if appeared that way I apologize. You make a good point on your last post and I can see where some singers might think EFX is a cure all. Rudy.

Just because a mic is inexpensive does not mean it is cheap. My favourite mic is an Apex 850 (>$30.00Cdn) includes clip and 15'xlr to xlr cord. I like it better than our Shure 58.

...and I'll gladly sing on a $20 Behringer XM8500. A good sounding mic.

I'd use them in my show if they came in skulls.

I'll say it ......Regarding microphones

They are one of the "major" pieces of equipment that make a change from singer to singer. SPEAKERS don't ....MIXERS don't AMPS don't.
Peoples VOICES and singing ability effect how they PERCEIVE THE QUALITY OF THE MIC TO BE. if they don't sound good ...the mic MUST BE A P.O.S. !!
If they don't COST $300 they must be a P.O.S and if the KJ is using a MIC I DON'T LIKE ...Hell HE OR SHE SUCKS !!!

MICS ARE PERSONAL CHOICES

unfortunatle the KJ makes the choices

Exactly ! I'm only paying about $40 for my mics, Audix OM2s. I'd say that is inexpensive, bt they are excellent mics.

Rudy - Us KJs have a tendency to vent about the negative, so sometimes it does sound as if we think all owners and singers are clueless. The majority of singers are great people and that is why a lot of us keep doing what we do, but that doesn't always come across here.

If I can hear the mix or what I sound like I can adapt in seconds to any mic or system. However at times I need all the help I can get. like when Im doing a strange song or one that is out of my talent range. They still make music without electricity

I paid $90 for my OM2, so you got a deal. 8-)

I will second the endorsement of the XM8500. Not bad handling noise, sound (to me) as good as an SM58. Good sensitivity and consistent off-axis response. I use them all the time.

For $20.00, the best low cost mic on the market. Blows away the Nady SP5, Nady SP1, and Shure PG58.

I know this is going to come off making me sound like a major A-hole, but it's time to call a spade a spade. If you can't tell the difference between the audio quality of a $20 Nady (or insert any other budget brand) mic and a $100 SM58 then I think you've helped to demonstrate the point the OP was making.

Are there inexpensive mics out there that can still sound pretty good? Yes. Do they have the same audio quality and properties of the more expensive mics? No. I can accept someone saying that a certain price a particular mic offers a good deal in terms of sound quality. But I completely reject any claim that those cheaper mics sound as good as the higher end mics. I've been there, I've used them, I know the differences. Frequency response, background rejection, handling noise, they all come into play and there are serious differences as you move up the scale.

I always use Ebay for my mics. When I figured out I could get them so reasonably priced there I went a little over board. I have more than I need. It makes it easier to swap them out for cleanings now.

Letitrip - I think a lot of people would agree. I prefer wired mics to cordless for sound, but some would disagree with me that there is no difference. I have a very expensive cordless mic that I don't use because I can tell a big difference in sound quality. When I started bringing it to shows people didn't like it. I had one wired mic ,Audix OM2, and one wireless,Audio Technica 3000 Series, to choose from. Even the layman ear could tell the difference.

You know - as a KJ I'll work my best with any singer that really wants to sound their best. But too often I get singers who will cup the mic (even when I tell the guys not to, but they don't care because it's the look they're after) or sing across the top, or in the case of the ladies hold the mic down to their waist... after awhile you say to yourself OK if that's the way you want it you're gonna sound like crap and I'm done at this end.

I have used 58s for years, won't use anything else, although I have been using an Audix myself lately and for my voice it is a better sound (very strong, major projection, shrill in high chest voice).

Just got an Audix OM2. In skulls. It's a good thing it's a terrific mic because it's what everyone has been using since I got it. The normal mics up front are Beta 58s and it really does sound better IMO. Smoother mids and more presence. I tried a song singing parts on the 58 and parts on the skull mic and preferred the skull mic.

Here's what it looks like:

By the way Bill, thanks for the post on the Audix skull mic. Just ordered one for my bro, being a metal head he will love it. Plus it's a great mic too. Rudy.
