It all comes down to what your customers and singers expect and are use to.

There are 2 types of singers

#1 goes out to have fun and sing
#2 goes out singing to have fun

#1 don't mind a dance set
#2 will throw a hissy fit if they think they are waiting an additional 8 minutes to sing

NOTHING AGAINST EITHER ONE OF THEM !!!

And i'm not against dance music at a karaoke show, I AM against advertising karaoke & then playing dance music at that show - that is NOT karaoke, that is a karaoke/dj mix. Simply advertise karaoke/dj and be done.
If it becomes all karaoke that night, then so be it, if it becomes all dj that night then so be it, if it becomes a mix of both then so be it, but anyone going in is doing so knowing that there may be dance music being played with the karaoke.

Should be advertised as to what it is so you can stand firm and everyone know's what is offered.

Exactly how it should be advertised! That one someone who JUST wants to sing will know that HEY there may be dance music tonight as well!

Heres how it happens at my place: I DO play snippets of fill between singers.

Often times people will get up on thier own to dance and fill the dance floor(singers and non-singers 40-50 people at a time). IF that happens then they will get that dance song, one more (and possibly a third) and by that time they are tired and start heading to thier seats. Then on Im on the mic announcing that HEY WERE GONNA GET BACK TO KARAOKE NOW and then bring up the next singer.

"Dance sets" are not planned and happen usually once or twice an evening spontaneously. But if I do get a dance set Im CERTAINLY NOT going to shut it down sand stop the party vibe simply for the sake of the next Karaoke song--as most of those dancers are NOT SINGERS.

Its the non-singer's time to get up and participate.

In addittion--at my place when its "PURE" karaoke I find the crowds dissapating around midnight. THATS LOST LIQOUR SALES.

IF there are dance breaks (7th Inning Stretches) and fill music between singers (30-45 seconds MAX) then I have a full crowd until 2-2:15 am.

Thats 2 full more hours of partying and additional LIQOUR SALES.

ImageJust open your eyes and ears!

People dancing to the tunes? Is the register ringing? Or are you getting complaints from singers and the management why your show isn't moving more quickly?

My room and my crowd expects music between each singer. It's usually not more than a minute; later in the night I play more current Top 40 and play perhaps half the song. I don't play the whole song...although I often get requests to "play more dance music". I remind those people that they are at a karaoke show so that's the priority.

The consensus is from my crowd is that it's the "right" balance of music to singers and they enjoy my mix. That says it all!

Play the latest Whats hot on the radio. People listen and even singers start wondering if it's out yet.. WIFI........Ive done weddings, parties and other events. The hosts at private parties want this mixture they are used to it and bar owners are starting to want it.

My horse is tired but he aint dead yet and it's been a hell of a ride. People know what my format is and I dont need to explain or advertise it. Josh is over at the White Horse if you want strict karaoke. Guess where the party crowd and action is. I can do karaoke or dance sets and anything in between

KJ OR MANAGEMENT ?

It takes a joint effort between all involved. But everybody needs to know what the goals are. It doesnt take formal business meetings just attitudes of all dealing with the public. The owner is the boss but he must respect the experience of the host and I always had an advantage because I have club management experience. Everybody concentrates on their job yet they are aware of whats going on with everybody else. THYe chores actually sometimes merge. How many times have you taken bottles or glasses up to the bar? If you did when the waitresses are breaking down they collect some of your books.

Dan, then you have a karaoke/dj show and should be advertised as such. Again, why can't people dance to karaoke? Gee once the music starts when I do "Rasputin", the floor is nearly filled before I sing the first word.

lonman, I'm sorry, but you're off base. Who shows up at a bar on a particular night is fluid thing. Sometimes I play a lot of music, sometimes is just karaoke, and sometimes its a mix. It depends on WHO'S THERE! How can you ADVERTISE a random thing????????

Impossible.

The host plays what the folks want, or he finds another gig. Maybe you've been doing your thing at that bar a long time, hey, and congrats. But trust me, it don't roll that way elsewhere. A guy or gal that can feel a room will make it... and the pretenders will be seeling their equipment on Craigslist in a years time. 8)

This is ultimately the key. You gotta do what the house wants. It does no good to sit there and have the same 3 people sing over and over again until their hoarse while the rest of the bar gets bored and either stops paying attention or leaves. In the same vein, if you have 10 singers in a nice rotation and they've each got a number of songs in, making them wait longer so you can play dance music usually is only going to frustrate them. This job is certainly about flexibility.

The way I've always looked at it is my primary goal is to ensure the bar is making as much money as possible. That's what I'm hired to do there. Yes I'm a Karaoke host and the singers I have are my top priority. However, I do have to manage the show in such a way as to keep as many of the patrons interested as possible, because that's what keeps butts in the seats and drinks in their hands. If it's a big rotation, I work the rest of the non-singers and try to get them involved by singing along or making noise or whatever. If the rotation is weak, I might throw in a DJ song that someone requested or grab my guitar and play and sing an acoustic number for them. It all depends on what's going on. IMHO the best hosts are those that can read a crowd and respond appropriately.

In some places you may survive with the DJ/Karaoke stuff, but here if people don't know what to expect they simply stop following your show. If your bar is in an area with lots of traffic, that's one thing. But in my territory, people go miles to get to karaoke shows. If they get there and they wait an hour before karaoke starts, or they sing one song an hour while twiddling their thumbs listening to DJ tunes, they stop coming back. Why drive 25 minutes only to find out you wasted your time?

The only shows that last long-term here are straight karaoke shows, with possibly one or two short dance breaks a night. Every DJ/Karaoke I have seen, if they don't give definite preference to karaoke singers when they show up, goes bye-bye.

Maybe in the big city you can drive 5 minutes and get to a place and find out that it doesn't have what you want and you just go down the street. Maybe you can find people who are cool with that. But it simply doesn't fly here. The people know where they are going, and when they go down the street they may not come back for a long time.

Why is it impossible? Like said if it's all karaoke, then so be it. If it turns out to be all dance music, then so be it. If it turns out to be a mix, then so be it, but don't just advertise karaoke only, put the /dj at the end of it & you are covered. If I go into a karaoke bar & hear nthing but dance music - I leave. I don't o to listen to dance music, I go to sing, bottom line. If I see something advertised as karaoke, then that's what I expect. If I see the /dj at the end of it, then I can make the choice to go or not.

100% correct, but don't just advertise karaoke if it's not all the time.

I see Lon's point. He is just saying your covering all basis, so you don't have someone come in and be upset there are music sets and never come back. If people know ahead of time they are less apt to make it an issue.

I'd say if it is the norm in your area that all KJs play music sets you wouldn't need to worry about it. Different areas have a tendency to create their own form of karaoke. In some areas people sing 2 songs in a row and that's the norm. I could never do that in my area.

I am constantly reminded by reading posts on the forum how different some venues are then others. I have no dance floor, with stadium like seating in front of the stage. People dance to the karaoke music, but it is at their tables or randomly around the bar. Basically any where they can find a bit of space. Music sets have never been an option for me. Small bar, no dance floor and very serious singers, so as you can imagine it would be suicide for me.

Funny, this topic. I filled in for a popular KJ 2 weeks ago on a Saturday night. I know he runs a stright Karaoke show but he did give me the Cupid Shuffle (in case I didn't have it) because this particular bar crowd demands it once a night.

Well I forgot all about it until someone put in a song slip for the Cupid Shuffle and everyone was eager for it. 30 person rotation but they were gonna riot if I didn't play it. Dang near everyone got off their chairs and had a blast dancing. No one got a case of the azz about it.

It's the only full song I played and it was a great mixer. I'd do it again at my home venue and not just at the end of the evening when I am breaking down if the crowd were looking like it would go over well.

So yeah, cater to the crowd isthe general rule.
