My husband and I were rotating weekend KJ gigs at a local bar with our friends, another karoake couple. On our "off" night, we went to see their show. The wife/kj owner told me her husbands daughter-in-law told him the bartender told her not to buy me a mixed drink, because if I drank it I would "spread my legs for anyone that asks".
(Which is totally outrageous.. I never flirt, touch, etc, and usually wear shirts way up to my neckline. Besides that, I am a Christian and only have a drink maybe once a a year.) My husband asked the daughter-in-law to confirm it, and she did. Not only that, but another friend of ours was sitting at the bar and said she heard the bartender say it too.. but later after the regulars that love this bartender got to her, she recanted it saying she wasn't sure who said it.
The bartender heard about it getting out, and she yelled at me ordering me to "step outside". I told her I wasn't going anywhere with her, then she proceeded to tell me to "Shut-up, telling me that wasn't what she said."
My husband told her this woman doesn't lie, has no reason to lie, and she better leave me alone, or his sisters that are there at the bar will take care of her. Next thing we know, he gets "cut off", and she says she will call the police. (Very weird!!) The the next day the owner who wasn't there says we need to talk. (But we never did, he was always too busy) He said he looked at the cameras from that night, and had a word with the bartender, that she was wrong. But also said my husband was also wrong and shouldn't have "threatened" his bartender. The next thing we hear from all the customers is that we are banned, he had replaced us with another kj that later didn't work out, and now our KJ friends that had told us what the bartender had said, is now taking over all our week-end nights there, playing every week-end! Also, now that they are playing every weekend, they are telling us the bartender didn't say that either, it must have been a mistake. (What is up with that?)
We thought these were our friends. A similar thing happened when another business asked to book us every Friday simply because they had fired this other couple.. actually his wife. They had hired someone else that didn't work out after they fired her and wanted us every Friday, but we said no because we are friends with the KJ they let go. And now they take our week-ends?
What do you think? Thanks.

Welcome to the happy world of kj'ing where backstabbing, rumor mills and show taking is not uncommon.

I say keep your friends close and you enemies closer...but with friends like this who NEEDS enemies? Watch your back and take the show they were fired from. Why should they care? They weren't fired for YOU to replace them...someone else did(and it later didn't work out) Plus- now- thanks to them having all their weekends full with your old show- they are busy... and you are available. Where's the problem?

Your husband threatened to harm the bartender. VERY STUPID. What did you think would happen? If I was the bartender, I would have cut you off too. Why after threatening the bartender, would you try to get a drink from her. If she is as big a lowlife as you say, she will probably spit in your drink or worse.
All that he said, she said stuff. Grow up. There are stupid people who say stupid stuff anywhere you go. If you feel it is out of hand, leave, quit, go away. Why would you want to work in a hostile environment? Sounds more like a bad high school story to me.

I used to get BJs in the parking lot to let people win competitions (or so I'm told). Last guy I heard spreading that rumor, husband of one of the singers, was told "Yup I do. You're wife wins often often enough"
Your best response is "Yup, that's why I don't drink unless I'm home alone with the husband. Then he gets a workout." Smile and walk away. Getting worked up about it is pure silliness, just sigh and walk away.
Get thick skin or get out of the biz.

as crude as some of these statements are, they are accurate.
Bar life you're gonna get drama. And the rumor mills always seem to be churning!
If you have a hostile environment, walk! Why lower yourselves. You can defend yourselves all you want, but the moment you threaten someone, you've lost, no matter what caused it.
Yep, you thought they were friends... and they horked ya over. That's what happens in this business. I've lost a few myself. And it never gets easy.
Just conduct YOURSELVES with honor and be better than the others.

I'm sorry this situation has caused you so much pain. It's tough to realise what you thought were friends aren't. Bars are 24/7 gossip mills. I swear sometimes I could write a book on the different characters and their stories we have in our bar.
I probably would have ignored the info since it was so blatantly untrue. I've had gossip about me in the bar. One day I'm pregnant with twins the next I'm gay.
It bothered you enough to confront the person. I can't say that's horrible. You went to the source to weed out the gossip. Unfortunately when you confront someone they usually get defensive and this sitiuation turned ugly. Spilled milk is spilled milk. Try to let it go and move on. Now you know who you can't trust. I wouldn't consider them friends any more, sadly and I wouldn't hold a grudge , life to short.

I've been in the rumor mill countless times. One night I simply drove a friend home one night that was too drunk to drive & the next thing I knew I was having an affair with her - heard that for almost 2 months before it finally settled down & moved on to someone else!
