Yup.....think about how much you would be fined for 125,000 illegal karaoke downloads on a hard drive:

125,000 x $80,000 = $10,000,000,000

Now, we all know that the "powers that be" don't actively police that sort of thing, BUT we don know that every year they make an example out of somebody that, frankly, pretty much deserves it.

I hope it happens to the guy down the street from me, with his gigantic illegal library!

Wow. While I do like to see action on these things that fine number is ridiculous. There is no way that her 24 songs caused $1.9 million in damages or fines. Truth is such absurd rulings simply weaken the ability to control it. If someone gonna get fined $1.9 million for 24 songs they'll go whole hog and get 100,000 songs and get fined for $100 billion. They're as likely to get that from the average person as the $1.9 million.

You have to put the number in a reasonably enforceable amount to make the penalty seem like it's something you actually *can* pay.

Do they really think they are ever going to get their money?
It seems this woman doesn't have a pot to pee in and they want 1.9 mil
I foresee a bankruptcy in her future which will make it all go away although her name will probably be written in some history books.

Just how many us have illegal music on their computer. Not stuff that you downloaded but say borrowed your kids disc and ripped it and then they lost it or it got destroyed some how? You have no proof that you ever had the disc does that now make it illegal music on your computer?

Just where does it end?

Considering you can legally download the songs at a high cost of $1.99ea..The real loss is more like $47.76.

Crazy and ridiculous judgement

They should not go after this lady but the person who allows the site to be open for theft

Um... not illegal downloads.

Illegal UPLOADS. She was fined because she uploaded the songs onto the kaaza network and made the songs available for file sharing.

Furthermore, due to the overwhelming legal expense the "powers that be" are now working with the service providers to get illegal uploaded files off their network.

BTW, that fine will never hold up. All the others in this action settled for $3500. Furthermore, no money was recovered from this that paid the legal fees to bring the action.

$80,000 fine for sharing music, while a dude who ran over & killed someone with their car gets 30 days. What a world.

They are still offering her to settle for $3000 to $5000 a song. LMAO First time I've heard of someone settling after the trial. It's because they know there is no way this woman can pay that outrages amount.

The funny thing is this woman would be lucky to get $1000 to them let alone $5000 a song for 24 songs. If she can't pay are they going to put a mom with 4 kids in jail? I don't think so. She has been used as an example.

I would be willing to bet all the jurors was bought. If somebody was selling illegal cd's on the street corner w0uld they bust him or go sue everybody that bought one. It is greed and stinks of something more illegal than what she done. I'm getting old and senile but from experiences with many things I can read between the lines.

Karma is working right now with other greedy rats and it is only a matter of time. If I done something like that I wouldnt be able to show myself in public forever. It is crap>>>>

They don't put you in jail for not paying Babs. They seize your property. Your house, your car, etc. If that doesn't settle the debt anytime, for the rest of your life, you gain any kind of money or property they will seize it till the debt is paid.

Also declaring bankruptcy does not make the fines go away, at least not in Canada and most likely it's the same in the rest of the Western World.

You are right Tim but they are not fines. RIIA does not have the authority to enforce copyright laws. They sued (the article says a fedederal jury but I suspect a civil proceeding) In a normal fair honest court the judge or the jury cannot award exhorbiment amounts unless a severe physical loss huge financial loss is proven.

I don't think she should be defended by anyone. Shure she is being sued for 24 songs but it is only a subset of well over 1000 that she apparently set up to file share.

In terms of file shareing she may have done 3000-5000 dollars of damage per song to the owners, if the songs were downloaded thousands of times.

We are not going to beat pirate karaoke by fighting the person who uses the 100,000 song hard drive but by punishing the person that distributes such drives enough for it to be a deterrent.

THe fine is meaningless anyway, as she obviously cant pay, and is unlikely to ever do so for the full ammount. It is a matter of principle for the record companies and I am sure that they probably would have settled for a few thousand dollars total if she had not made it go so far up the chain of courts (and they still are).

I think if they were gonna make an example they should have chosen someone who deserved it...like to a-holes that load 6000 onto hard drives...But 24 songs? Gimme a break! This is a case of selective and inneffective justice!

I think that's the same woman that got busted a few years ago for the same thing. Well, she just got busted again.

...and she was sharing many THOUSANDS of songs. They picked 24 high-profile songs to make the case simple.
