Quote: That is preposterous!! Can you please post the link so we can e-mail them in your defense? Really, in their own defense. if you want people to enjoy your music, they need to be exposed to it. It seems like common sense to me

Ollie... You should contact your local News Station and present them with your story. They may actually be interested in airing it and this way it will get more exposure.

The last gal to get on the bar was one of my customers. The guy that helped her up was Chris. They are the ones we did the wedding for. He has since been hired as a weatherman at channel 5 in Cheyenne. I also have a very good friend that is a reporter for channel 7 in Denver.

I saw this video clip on the news the other day, and we thought it was so cool!! I loved it. Sadly, I must inform you, my husband came home yesterday and let me know they already divorced. I guess their party high didn't last very long.
Oh, and congratulations Karen!! I noticed your name is green.

Not true. What your husband heard about was this parody video. Also over a million hits and helping to sell the song.

It's my understanding that the bar has (or should have) already paid BMI for the right to have DJ, KJ, band, and jukebox music played in the bar. This is a not for profit video of happenings at the bar. Seems like they already got paid.

Like it or not the artist owns the product and that gives them the right to control it. A private post on the internet without permission is illegal. The artist has no way of getting paid for it's use.
That brings up a good question.
If ASCAP would require Youtube to pay it's dues, then there would be no more controversy about music posts. Seems simple enough to me.
Why are many videos allowed to stay up while others are not? Shouldn't royalties be collected for the ones that are there?

Youtube do have to pay royalties, but they don't want to pay too much. I'm pretty sure that this is what the artist is bitching about, rather than having a go at the users for posting it.
In the UK, PRS is ASCAP/BMI's counterpart. The PRS raised the issue that youtube makes a lot of income through advertising by streaming popular music, so they raised their licence fees. Rather than pay them, youtube blocked UK visitors from viewing them until the fees came back down.

Probably 6 of one, half a dozen of the other in this particular tug of war, but as ever, the artist himself is rarely the winner. I'd be willing to bet that if the artist saw that video posted on your own website, rather than myspace or youtube, nothiing would have happened.
