I guess this is just a ramble more than anything.

This past week I ran the "talent tent" at our local fair. I was in a 40 x 80 tent right next to the midway. we had a Karaoke show each day (ooh my what a bunch of talent out there!). on wednesday I had a solo banjo player / vocalist. He did a sing along show with the kids. on fri and sat we had 2 bands each eve varying from 60s to 80s rock to an all original group who had a really unique style (modern grateful dead?). a country rock band, and a 70s to modern rock band who were all 16 and 17 (really good too). during My karaoke shows we had a wide variety, but mostly country.and a "bluegrass trio" on sunday aft.
Ive got like 10 songs by taylor swift, I think they were all done 3 times or more. a couple were done like 4 times each show (gag). I also have 2 miley cyrus songs..i got plenty sick of those too, But i did love having the kids for karaoke. I tossed the normal "no repeats" rule out the window thinking we had a constantly changing crowd. but did not let somebody sing a song right after it was just done.

anyone else do anything like this? It was a lot of work, But the pay was "ok" and I did meet some great people.

the lil guy in pic 3 is 5, obviously can't read yet but he did watching you , he had help in the verse, but sang the chorus by himself. it was priceless. (Rodney atkins played the main stage that night) pic #2 is my "show me your rack pic lol. the right side stuff is my normal karaoke rig. I usually set it on a single 18 sub. my hard drive, wireless mic , video converter and computer power supply are mounted in it along with the mackie powered mixer. I have 2 rack spaces avalible in there where i can mount a power amp for the sub or an ext effects and sonic maximizer.

I forgot to add, I did the whole show with no help, and only had one failure. my berringer compressor / limiter gave up the ghost for no apparent reason with very limited use. NO WONDER I dont buy there junk! I bought it from a friend almost new for a "good price" thankfully I had a spare. I lost about 15 min while I figured out what had failed in the chain and re patched it. thankfully it was during karaoke and not the bands.

Sweet!! I do a show for my town where it's children that sing, and I have the same Taylor Swift repeats and Miley Cyrus. I am getting fond of "Hoedown Throwdown" these days. Karaoke with children singing is precious. I love it. And I tossed the "no repeat" rule out the door too, because it would bum them out. Besides, each time you hear it, it's different with them. It's a great experience. I also get a lot of songs that they've learned from "Guitar Hero", especially "Eye of the Tiger", and I've never seen anyone do the moonwalk like one of the little boys that came out one day and sang Michael Jackson. Sweeeeeet!

Kids shows are QUITE different than a regular weekly bar show. Yes the no repeat rule goes right out the window to start - as they all want to sing the most popular song it seems plus the duet rule also goes out the window as they tend to want to sing in groups most of the time. Kid shows can be great fun, unfortunately typically not profitable for a weekly gig, private shows are much better suited for kids/family type shows.

Good Job.... I think the largest karaoke I ever hosted was about 300. However have I sang and MC'D before crowds of 5000 sometimes at fairs. Once you have done the huge crowds small crowds do not get the juices flowing or magic as much. But you have taken another step to being a good host... KUDOS

What, you didn't have anyone requesting "Closer"? Don't you know you're sure to lose customers if you don't let them sing songs like that?

Seriously, good job -- kids at shows can be wonderful (or not!).

thanks guys. small shows that don't have "energy" had already gotten boring. I prefer to stick to the bigger shows when i can, or bars where I know the energy stays up. those shows tend to be the ones that pay well. they can't all be like that but over time we get to have a good idea of what will go and what will flop.
