My mixer has a head phone jack. Will i be able to use headphones to improve my mixing abilities?

Is using headphones going to be like sitting in the audience?

Would a cordless ear monitor plugged into the head phone jack work?

I don't want to use it as a monitor. I want to be able to hear and mix the final mix.

Of course it helps, with a good set of headphones you can hear quite a bit more and in greater detail that simply listening to speakers. You can also hear both tracks you are mixing simultaneously which is a must...
