I have an older bar regular (lady) who sits at the video poker machine all night. When it is getting later and wilder 11 or 12pm, people request video/songs in between singers. She gets really uptight and gives me and the patrons dirty looks when I play for example: Billy Idol's Mony Mony. You know how the crowd responds. If I play "don't trust a ho" or "me so horny" you would think I needed to repent at church on Sunday! I try to please the majority of the room and these songs/videos keep people spending. Should I suggest earmuffs? She would also need blinders (like a horse) to keep her from looking at the videos on my big screen. I think she gets off on this. She drinks, smokes, and gambles all night....talk about the wrong one to judge! What should I do? She's hard to ignore. Sometimes she comes up and yells at me. The bar owner is happy. I'm bringing in $$ they haven't seen in a long time. HELP! What should I do?

I say ignore her !!! -- If it's 12:00 and she's the oldest thing in the bar --she is out of her element and will have to put up with it or get a cab ride back to the home LOL

Not to poke fun... I'm not sure how old is old to you ..but maybe she has no where else to go ? Sitting in the bar wth all her vices is HER LIFE ? Maybe attempting some sort of compromise with the song selection can keep all customers ..happy ?

If that don't work and she still is giving you dirty looks --KNOCK THE HAG ON THE HEAD AND THROW HER OUT BACK !!

Great point Jam. That's one aspect of this story that no one has touched on. This lady has nothing else going in her life but to sit, drink, smoke, and play her machines. Everyone else in the bar HAS A LIFE. To her, what she's doing there (at the bar) IS her life. So naturally, anthing that is interupting her FUN, is an annoyance to her. Sometimes the sad is the truth.

So whatever you do don’t play “Copacabana”!!!

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she's lost her mind!

I totally agree also Rosario. It's hard for sure to know what makes this lady tick. Trying to talk to her you'll find out more about her personality. I'd bet though the bar is her life.

The gentlemen I spoke of is in the bar 24/7 because he doesn't want to be home alone. He is an old vet with a lot of health problems. His biggest fear is dying alone.

Some of us may find it more beneficial to get UP CLOSE & PERSONAL emotional help for ourselves rather than trying to analyze someone else from afar? Ya think?

It's a fine line. Depending on your venue this type of situation may never have to arise. A lot of karaoke hosts just go to a gig and do their job without to much personal contact. But in my case I work in a small venue on a regular basis. I have a lot of regulars and get to know them on a personal level.

Trying to understand where people are coming from can be a huge advantage and makes doing my job easier. I figure she has nothing to lose by trying to make nice.

Sorry, there's nothing to continue. SOMEBODY ALREADY GOT KILLED. That was the last verse.

Oh yeah He'd give me hard time. I'd get the glares when a loud song came on. He'd yell from the bar to turn it down. When I wasn't looking he'd turn my speaker away from him.

Don't worry we had a talk about him touching the speakers. Once I learned it was him I just had to explain it causes feedback and he stopped. He was like a little kid just waiting to get caught.

I treated him with respect although he wasn't giving me any at first. I had to earn his respect and once I did he became my best ally.

Now this approach won't work on everyone. But in this case it worked for me. Of course if trying to fix the situation myself did not work I would have insisted the owner do something.

He turned out just to be a lonely old man that thought of the bar as his own. I was an intruder he didn't know, in his mind. I'd rather make peace than war. It feels so much better than having someone kicked out.

Angel if you disagree that's fine. I see no reason to have any further discussion about this man.

An off duty bar employee wanted to give me crap and stand in front of the speaker and complain it was too loud. He doesn't work there anymore.

Anyone touching my stuff gets the owner told about it and if they want to turn it into an issue they can leave. Forvever. Or i can leave.

Got any stuff for me to touch?
Oh, and I'm not going anywhere. EVER.

Doing VFW shows I seem to deal with crabby regulars on occasion. Often these are officers or members of the post so I have to be very tactful when dealing with them. It was interesting reading some of the suggestions... I usually find it best to make a point of finding out one of their favorite songs and playing it earlier in the night while I'm getting started. I have 3 or 4 songs that I play everytime I'm up there just because I know a few of my non-karaoke regulars want to hear them, and they're also paying customers...

It's the risk we take when we go into these private organizations, I believe. We had the same issue, did an Eagles club once a month. The majority of the members enjoyed it, especially when we obliged by playing "their" kind of music, and sang it, too. There will always be those who considered it their own place and anyone coming in from outside is an interloper. Even my Thursday night gig, I get people nattering about how hard it is to have a quiet dinner and chat with a friend once karaoke starts. Well, why not sit in the restaurant instead of the bar? So quiet in the restaurant you can hear a pin drop. Can't please everyone, as we all know.

That's the other reason I try to introduce myself. Many of these guys/gals seem to change their tune a little when they realize I'm also a veteran and know all the same officers that they do... LOL...

On the other hand uur Saturday nights draw a younger crowd because we run a dollar longneck special. Unfortunately I doubt half the young-uns coming in the door know what VFW means... These people have nothing to do with this thread though...

If nothing else, my really crabby regulars tend to get a free drink from time to time
