Visited Dangerous Dan's show on Wednesday night and was very surprised to find that he couldn't play my CDG - new Kelly Clarkson, knew nobody would have it. Anyway, thanks for ripping it to your computer, Dan, so I could sing it. Don't forget to delete it...I forgot to mention that before I left, but I'm sure you'll do that. :P

Don't think I'd ever not be equipped to play other peoples' music, but I guess this is venue dependent. Dan's venue is an iconic place - people go there to drink and incidentally sing, I think, and many I talked to didn't even KNOW there was karaoke going on. Wish I had a gig like that!

Hey Karen, so glad you came! (I sent you a PM too.) It was an unexpected surprise :)

I actually DID have most all those songs, I think they may have been from the Chartbuster "Best of 2008" and "Best of 2009" compilations, because I'm sure I don't have the artist disc that you do. And not to worry...I never keep tracks I haven't paid for, so rest assured that whole file folder was nuked at the end of the night.

As for not being able to play CD+Gs, when I got home I looked at the website for the software I use and it said:
Quote:
Play Direct CD+G Discs with Deinterleave
which I never knew! In fact, someone else brought a disc as well that night. Usually I will have whatever song/version they already bring. I do have a CD+G player in my rack, but it would have taken some wire-switching to enable that. But since I know my computer program will work, I'll do a little more research as to how those files are called up on the interface.

It's WAY different than most every other karaoke room in town where singers come to sing. Most of those who attend my Wednesday venue make it more of a frat party where people come to drink and hook up, and, oh yeah, there's karaoke too for coming up on stage and showing off. I can't tell you the number of supremely drunk co-eds who just hold the mic and dance to the karaoke track. HellO? The mic isn't a prop to dance with, you're supposed to SING!

And although trying to keep order sometimes supercedes my duties as host, the bottom line is everyone has a great time whether or not they sing. And I keep the register ringing.

Me and some friends went to another show in downtown Seattle last Sunday that was almost the complete opposite. It was a room full of singers who you didn't have to beat over the head to "sing one, bring one". The KJ segued the end of one karaoke track to the beginning on the next one. And it didn't take 30-60 seconds for the singer to drunkenly realize that it was their turn and miss the start of their song. They were poised, ready and waiting. Those are the kind of places I like when I go to sing!

Haven't really had a bar karaoke gig like that yet. I think that would be great not worrying about my books getting written on, and use my nice cordless mics because people know how to treat them. Maybe someday...

Eh, I don't know, if DDK is willing to throw KJ's he's never met under the bus for the quality of their show and do so in print, I think he can handle some criticism of his on a web forum from someone who actually saw him work. All's fair in love, war and apparently Karaoke.
