I know this, or similar ?'s, have been asked before. But I'm browsing and can't find the exact answer I need. Sorry if this has been covered time and again.

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I ran my karaoke through my laptop.

I have an external sound card (that I use for recording onto my laptop), so I hooked that up, and used a basic audio cord to run the sound out to my mixer. And I have winamp with key changer and all that blah-blah, so I just used the karaoke screen on my laptop for vocal reference.

Sitting beside my setup, is my sons brand new flat screen, which I'd love to be able to use.

So, am I doing this right, and I just need an S-video to go from my laptop out to the TV? I'd love to not have to use the external soundcard also, but that's my only option, right?

(only for home use... I have many bad cdg's, they have scratches and some songs now skip, that I've ripped to my hard drive, and it would be nicer to sing this way, rather than re-rip them all to cdg again... though I do have a good karaoke player as well)

Laptop is Dell Inspiron E1505 (couple years old, has the s-video out, and the other plug for, uh, an external monitor I guess?)

TV is.. a Sylvania something or other. (less than 6 months old, has the right jacks)

Mixer is Behringer PMH2000

Machine is (not that you need to know this part) RSQ triple tray

Thanks, in advance, to anyone with suggestions

.

I believe an S video from your Laptop to the TV in is all you need.
You'll need to set up the dual desktop/screen on your laptop and the Lyrics should appear?

On the chance of sounding reallllyyy dumb ... does the s-video make my SOUND go out to the tv too? Or just the video? I know, but yes, I'm serious. Because running sound out to my tv doesn't make sense, but again- first time I've done this.

That sounds really alien to me, but I'm sure I can dig around and figure out how to do that. But thanks, I wouldn't have known.

Ok, just googled up that answer... sounds simple enough to set up for dual screen.

Thanks jam.

S-Video only does video. It's not like coaxial (TV cable) which does sound and video. You'll still need your sound card.

dual displays is almost self explanatory: one has the main screen (what you see when you are running with just the computer monitor) and the other allows you to extend the desktop onto a second display.

you need to go into display properties and make sure you've extended the desktop onto the second screen. To do this you need to click on the little picture of the second screen click on extend desktop so there is a check in the box and hit apply. If the tv has the background that is on your computer screen you click yes.

You should be good to go.

Ok, I think I'll mess with it again tonight. I would have tried last night, but couldn't find my $@#% s-video cord, I know I have one... somewhere... that went with my old camcorder. So I just didn't run the video out. I wouldn't have known about the "dual screen" setup anyhow, and most likely the neighbors would have heard me pitching a hissy.

So now to find that hidden s-video cable, or head to radio shack:)

thanks, both of ya.

Thanks Johnny5.. :)

I did look that up, and it looks simple enough to do.

Will I never learn? I asked hubby about it and he said "yeah, we have one of those, I know where it is"...... then he got home and what he thought I needed, and found for me, was a VGA hookup cord- I think that's what it's called. (and by then, RS was closed)

I didn't have time to try it out, but hoping that will work? :?: :?: :?: I know it worked for gaming on the internet and putting that out to the tv.

Hey, if I can swing a round trip ticket (ya sure you want round trip? Lol)... we'll just do karaoke at my place 7 nights in a row (no worries, I can fill the house)... and we'd get ya a case a night. How's that sound?

I still haven't tried it out again, I'm sitting here messing with my guitar, learning some new songs... karaoke will wait;)

S-video to TV requires a "Dongle", $5.00 at electronics store, $40.00 at Radio Whack..

(psstt... jd, I know what a "dongle" is... or wait... it that a "dangle"?) haha

Ok, the vga thingamajigee worked fine. Once I figured out I had to function+f8 keys and then draaaaagggg the lyric screen onto the tv.

Anyways, it worked. And for what little I'm going to do it that way, it's fine. I'll probably eventually grab an s-video cord too, just to try it out as well. (because my inquiring mind will want to know the difference)

Thanks for your help... I'm gonna check mark this thread, cause I'm good to go:)

Johnny, between your posts and that new pic you put up... you're scaring me:)

But, since you asked: Yes, a dongle does have to be the perfect size, and needs to be inserted at a specific angle... or it's worthless.

that's me, a long time ago, when my dongle used to work.....

after over 35 years of marriage, my dongle just has to fit my hand.....no specific angle.....just gotta clear the toilet rim......

Great, me and my superstitious nature.. I don't like my post count having a 666 in it, so I've got to make (6670-6664= uh, err, umm, 6) Yeah, 6 more posts to get that changed;)
