I just got done cleaning my speakers thoroughly. I didn't realize how very dirty they were until I started. Of course my equipment stays at the bar, so I don't physically handle them much. I cover my other equipment, so it was pretty clean. We always talk about cleaning mics, but what about your other equipment? I actually found dust bunnies on top of my speakers. Aaarg! I need to stay more on top of that.

I'm not a KJ, so mine don't get very dirty. They're typically covered at home, until in use. (all my equipment)

That's a necessity. After having my mixer settings "fixed" by my grandsons more than once, and digging matchbox cars out of my speaker cabs... I had to:)

Mics- after every sing-a-thon I have at home. I'm a huge germ hater.

It has a lot to do with the smoking laws, everything in a bar got caked with tar and grime a few years ago when indoor smoking was legal. Now things stay clean A LOT longer.

I agree Fred. When I used to clean I'd have dark brown tar on everything. Now it seems to be just dust. It is much easier to remove dust than sticky tar.

A little dust, in and of itself, will probably not hurt your speakers. Sound will not be affected (unless its caked on mud or something). Tar and nicotine isn't as much of a problem today, as Dr Fred says.

I have carpeted speakers and it's not uncommon for my white-haired cat to decide she wants to sleep on them. So a lint roller is always around. You can also carry a can of compressed air if they are starting to look unsightly on the job.

As far as mikes are concerned, I've actually seen a gadget that you can hook to your mike stand or TV stand. When a singer picks up a mike to sing, it sprays the mike with an anti bacteriant. Don't know whether that's good for the mike or not, but it will probably sell in this day and age of H1N1.
