Many members have commented that they like to submit songs just for fun. Further more the topic of ranking seems to go down many avenues.
I for one am a bit confused, here are some statistics:

Top 50 ranked members submitted a total of 238 songs:

4o asked to be ranked on all of their songs ... 210 songs

9 requested no ranking on 1 or more songs ... 20 submissions

1 asked that none of their songs be rated ... 8 songs

98% of the top 50 asked to be ranked. The overwhelming majority pushes the Rank Button. Why? To be competative? To seek an honest opinion of ones performance?

What is the real purpoes of ranking? I do not believe that it is just for fun.

I would like to know your opinion.

Thankyou,

Cort

Good Lord, that is some statistical analysis!

Whew, I couldn't keep up

Bottom line it appears that almost everyone wants to be ranked.

I would think that it was because they wanted to see how they compare against others. Yep, Competition. Hmmm, seems to be the nature of man.

Phill,

You are working way too hard at this. Take a break and spend some quality time with your children. They are much more important than we are, well almost lol.

I agree that we are competitive by nature and for many, having fun is winning. I'm not sure though how many are willing to admit to it.

Thanks again Phill for taking the time to care and making the right calls.

The karaoke atmosphere has always been very competitive. Most of us are in it for the attention we get. We love to be the center of attention, we love to hear compliments and we love to sing. If we truly didn't care what other people think we would stick to just singing in the shower. Why bother putting yourself out there for others to judge if it doesn't matter. I think we all take this very seriously..... the problem is we need to learn to not take ourselves so serioulsly.

.....food for thought.....

You may be better than you think you are, you may be worse.

You are probably an awesome singer...... but there will always be someone out there better than you are.

Give yourselves the chance to appreciate all the exceptional talent we have on this site and in the karaoke world.

Be willing to accept that someone out there may have some valuable words of wisdom for you. This is a great tool for personal and professional growth.

It can be serious and fun at the same time enjoy your moments in the sun....they are all too fleeting.

OK I'm stepping off my soap box now.

Wannabe,

I would first like to compliment you on your singing ability.

Your input is valuable and I appreciate your comments.

Margie (my wife) and I have hosted Karaoke for several years and have loved every minute of it. It would be an understatement to say that we have experienced a wide range of singers. We never held competitions nor would we ever seriously critique a singer. We do work with a local vocal studio and refer those that seriously want to improve their singing/songwriting skills.

The problem with critiquing is not with singers that have an ear for music it is those who don't. During a 2 month period I recorded 130+ karaoke singers. I made comp CD's for many of the regulars. I did not give them to everyone, many as you can imagine come to party. Singing ability was not at the top of their asset list. One fellow thought that he was really ready for the big time, he sang " God Bless the USA". To say that he was off key was putting it mildly. I had recorded his performances several different times. Without comment I gave him a CD. He would later say that there must have been something wrong with the recording.

The bottom line is that many singers here are looking for a moment of glory and a nice comment . You might be supprised at how many "perfect 10's" are off key.

I would still like to see a top 10 songs of the week. One song per week without the submitters name. All members would vote for the song that they liked the best. Songs ranked in order of total votes. Top ten singers and their songs would be listed at the end of the week. NO CRITIQUING - NO RANKING.

and that is my soap box

thanks for listening

Cort,

I think I may just do that once.. Alter the list and the way it's put up just once.. (next week) just for giggles In a fair sort of way... (i'll ask webguru if that's ok with a certain method that he may like.) and "try" to create a poll like that. and see if it flies...

First of all Court... I'd like to thank you for the compliment. I work very hard to try to improve myself everday and still have a long way to go. When I get to the point that I sound as good as your wife I'll be happy. She truly is one of my favorite singers on this site. (and I'm not just blowing smoke up your butt because you complimented me)

My husband and I have also hosted many shows and we have a lot of fun doing it. We have encounterd the same kinds of singers you mentioned above. I beleive that some people are just tone deaf and they can't hear when they go off key. I'm sure there is some scientific explaination for this. Sometimes a singer can practice and improve. Unfortunatly I think some people will never get better because you can't fix what you can't hear. They still can have fun and be a star just like everyone else.

We had a guy who loved to come in and sing hard rock songs. He was so off pitch and had no timing and sounded awful.....Imagine Bon Jovi sung through the nose in monotone........but, his thing was playing the air guitar. He would get up to sing and start air-strumming he would fall on his back, flip over and do crazy stunts while perfoming. The crowd would cheer and yell and he thought he was a rock star. I guess what I'm trying to say is he was having fun and the crowd was having fun although sometimes it can be very hard to listen to it still gave the night something special. Karaoke is for everyone. The good and the bad.

I think sometimes its easy to get caught up in trying to be serious about singing and we forget to have fun. I hope it never stops being fun for me. If it does I guess I'll have to find another hobby.

Wannabe, now you just never know, I may like that smoke thing..lol

I know that you understand that as KJ's with a good ear we cringe at times. Our job though is to see that everyone has a good time and is treated fairly. Which brings me to this point, the ranking system is viewed from many directions. Ultimately though anything other than a 10 can cause disention and hurt feelings. How to avoid this, do not rank..

We are competive by nature, therefore give a choice

1. JUST FOR FUN.. put up a song here just like going to Karaoke, listen for the applause (or a nice comment). NO Hurt feelings

2. TOP TEN ... Enter if you are competitive. I suggust a twist, Submit 1 song without your name listed. More songs would get listened to, no names, no comments, just a vote for your favorite song. The winners will have their names listed with the winning songs..No losers-No hurt feelings

3. Critique... those seeking non-professional help, no ranking just honest opinions.

Looking forward to seeing (hearing) more of you,

Cort

Cort..
Never a problem... I have been quite Ill all day.. Voice is now Gone...

No subs for a few for me.. Time to sit out.. especially with a 101 temp.

IF this was competition I'd walk away very happy, I had a real good run.

If this was work... I'd take a sick day. 8)

Being this is fun... I can STILL contribute :D  8)

I can say I'm still very much in this for reals!!! :P

I agree with Cort--I've had singers who complain about unfair treatment by judges in contests they have entered, despite the fact that they sing sing just well enough to have fun at karaoke.

I've then recorded these singers singing at my show and sent them home with a CD of their performance. Some came back humbled, while others (as in Cort's case) faulted the recording equipment! THESE are the guys who made the WB's Superstar USA so much fun to watch!

Hey Big Mike...
Come join us in the showcase.. heck PM me the software is free (atleast I'll help you find it) or you can buy Cool Edit Pro, and we seem to have a real neat thing going.. it'd be great to have a great "singing" KJ like yourself aboard.

Hello Everyone!

I think Cort has a great idea here...I've got one twist tho...lets see what you think about it...

1. Just for Fun: perfect as Cort has stated it.

2. For the Competitive-minded folks: Top Ten Poll...
Poll will list all subs in a given period....
All Members will be listed and allowed ONE confidential vote.
After the member has voted his/her name disappears from the list.
Voting stays open for 2-3 days or until all members have voted.

Top Ten vote-getters will be placed on a top-monthly poll.

I think this would incorporate both Cort and Brian's ideas in a fun
and friendly manner. I also like Brian's idea of that top monthly sub
being featured on "That's Karaoke".

3. Critique: Perfect as Cort stated :)

If I've been redundant, I apologize :)

/HUGS,
Emma

i for one like the rastings...good r bad doesn't matter if its there honest opinion....i'm not sure how this can be competitive, unless we sing the same songs....if a person won something it might be different but so far we don't, not that i would anyway....but i just don't understand how I can compete with anyone, its like golf ...ur on ur on, no one to blame but you, i like it that way... the top singers board is all wrong and so is the top songs, so whats to compete for?

i sing to be heard and to get honest comments, sure i like 10s who doesn't, but most if not all the time i'm NOT a 10...IMO....i post a song on here and after its ran its course i think...my god i can't believe they didn't hear that screw up....i'm betting we all do that....we feel we got away with something.....

i'm very competitive, and if singing against someone i will give it all i got to win..... but here i don't feel anyone is singing against anyone....were just singing to each other and having fun...and hoping to learn a thing r 2...

thru the yrs of singing i have picked things up from different artist as i'm sure we all have...to form our own style.... i grab a little conway a little merle , a little elvis...a little jones...u get the idea... then i use them when i want to, to make a song mine, r to make it different...its like taking the best of a singer and leaving the rest... then u blend them all together and you get ur own style... the more u add hopefully the better u become and different at the same time*...ok how did i get on this subject? lol...sorry for rambling on.....but i have learned quite a bit thru the yrs and i don't mind sharing.... u sing long enough ur bound to learn something right? i'm here to gather a few more pieces of different singers voice/style be it mad r woman... i just want to get better...i'll step down now...ty
