I've been sitting here reading all the back and forth on this subject and to some it has gotton old. To others it is a very relevent subject.
Here is what I do know.
If you download a karaoke song (music and visual lyrics) and it is branded with either Chartbusters or Sound Choice logos (can't speak for the other brands) from any site except their own sites, you are paying for/or not nonlicenced for personal or commercial (regardless what the site says) for the US market. Forget BMI/ASCAP, if you have any doubt just give Chartbuster ot SC a call.
The sites that offer the downloads don't care whare the purchase comes from and therefore themselves are pirates (if the track is downloaded on US soil) since they don't have the rights.
Let the flame war continue.

Poor Rumbolt. The person asked which sites were legal and which weren't. While we may disagree on what IS legal, Rumbolt just gave him an example of what WASN'T legal. Seems like just what we were talking about.
Again I wonder--some of you are sick of subjects, some of us are new and it is important info for us. Why not just avoid threads you are sick of? instead of trying to hurt people's feelings?

Ok do i get this correctly you join an OPTIONAL group, that will potentially fine you $1000, after they AUDIT your books.
Hope you kept that reciept for the gift birthday CDG from back in 2001.....
Unless you have VERY good records of your purchases, and all of your reciepts the audit process would be a major task. It would take me days to just compare my stack of CDS to all the songs in my list for an audit.
Is the KIAA going to send an "Auditor" to your home to go through your stack of CDs????
I bet FEW kjs keep reciepts for all their CDs more than a year or so.
Why would anyone pay 75$ a year to go thourgh the hassle even if they are 100% legit???

I doubt they are auditing for reciepts. They are auditing the music on the original discs one is supposed to have in possession in comparison to the music on the hard drive. I just went through my own 'audit' not for any other purpose but to make sure everything was listed - found I actually do not have 6 of my discs even listed in the books. I read the first post and will stand by my response. The question was about legality.

My feelings weren't hurt at all, in fact I can take it. The subject is about downloading and the legal aspects of it. I was in the simplest of terms so EVERYONE involved in this discussion could understand attempting to explain the position of the two largest karaoke producers in the USA.

Getting back to the original question. If you are, as I am, making an attempt to only use legit discs in your library, would you feel comfortable downloading songs from Tricerisoft, SBI, Power Karoke, or other services? I think if I were to download (and pay for) a song from one of these or other sites, I would want to be able to use it in my show. If I play it and the title screen comes up Sound Choice, or Chartbusters, or something not expected, I would know that it was questionable.
How comfortable do you feed having songs from these sites in your library? Would you feel comfortable having your library audited with these songs included?

I don't generally buy downloads. I like to have t he hard copy as backup, so it's pretty much a non issue with me. As for being "comfortable having your library audited with these songs included". I would not be comfortable at all, but not because I have songs of this type, but because I am NOT OK with being audited in the first place. At least, not on the terms that SC dictates.

I buy from SBI or Karaoke Version nowadays. They are actual manufacturers so I doubt that I would get in trouble with their downloads.

Quote: If I'm coming off a bit harsh, it's a tired old subject, one that I really get annoyed with.
I'm sorry! I started this thread and I didn't anticipate this much animosity toward newbies to the business. Some of us don't have all the knowledge that you seem to have on the subject.
I know I don't speak just myself when I say it would have been a whole lot easier to just buy a hard disk with 250,000 songs on it and start from there. I personally am trying to do it the legit way. So, if you are true to the anti-piracy thing, TOGER, how about lighten up a little bit?

This is all really easy. No combination license exists or has ever existed for the use of downloads in a U.S. based show- Period.
Disagree? Then it should be easy to find and post a copy of such a license from ANY MFR. for U.S. BASED USE.
Feel free to do so.....
Also, it should be easy for a mfr. to download a license document covering U.S. based use in a text.doc with each track so the KJ is covered. Anyone got one of those? Please post it.
OK, please continue......

Talked to SBI on the phone a couple of weeks ago about this. They said that you can do whatever you like with our downloads, but they may not be authorized in your territory. They suggested I contact a major music publisher and see what they have to say.
And again, I'm just going to keep spending my money, keeping my receipts, running my shows, pray for the U.S. equivalent of the UK Dub license and wait for the law to finally catch up with the 21st century. I don't care anymore. I'm just trying to help others have a good time.
