Always talk to the management first and find out what is and is not allowed. My job is not to censor or judge but to make sure everyone has fun within the management's guidelines. The regulars know what is allowed and if a newbie requests a song from the book that is questionable, I simply tell them I'm not allowed to play that here, please pick another song.
On the other hand the rowdy places I play, have no restrictions on what can be sung or played for dance sets. Even then, when an explicit song is requested, I make an announcement saying if you are easily offended or don't like cursing, now would be a good time to take a bathroom or smoke break. Come back in 5 minutes.
I never have problems with the adults by handling it like this. The kids at the middle school dances, different story. Even with the clean or super clean edits of some of the popular music, I still refuse to play them for that age group. Earned me a broken side mirror last week for refusing music requests from one group of kids.
