Do they still make you learn that to get your Ham license? I learned it in Boy Scouts, but I forgot it.

You don't need to anymore just take a written test about radio theory, & rules and regs.

Kinda makes me mad when I think of all the hours I spent learning it to get my ham license and now they practically give them away.

Yeah, it kinda made it not worth keeping up with Amateur radio anymore. My rig has been in my closet on the floor for 5 years.

I prefer it with green eggs myself. But seriously. I can remember back when I was a kid, my friend's dad was a HAM operator. Had a basement room full of equip. A 60' tower in the back yard with all sorts of antennas on it. Coolest things I remember was the ASCII art, and I think we even listed to the space shuttle once but I could be wrong.

Swann 500C , Moseley TA-33 Antenna (I don't even remember how to spell the names of my gear..LOL).. Heck, forget what I had to do to get a General. In those days I had to take a test to get the microphone for my Chicken Band rig... They sold me the radio, but I had to take elements 2,3 and 9 of some FCC test before I got the microphone to my (in those days) 23 channel CB rig.

QRZed the frequency is this frequency in use
callin CQ-DX and standing by for a copy.

(no, that wasn't on the CB rig...HAHAHAHA)

I miss the old kit radio stores.

Heathkit, Allied, Hallicrafters, First SW receiver was a Lafayette Starfire portable. Spent hours on that QSL'ing.

Heathkit....my Dad built a Heathkit hi-fi with turntable, and AM/FM. It had a single wooden case speaker that stood about 4 ft tall with a maybe 1-1/2ft square base. The only bad thing about the record player was that it skipped pretty easily. Also, you had to wait a bit for the tube amplifier to warm up. You could look through the cracks in the cabinet and watch the tubes start to glow, and the speaker would crackle when you turned the volume knob! The whole thing was plugged into a wall outlet and could be controlled by a light switch. So get this--my sister is playing a record for probably the fifth time in one day and I'm sick of it. I go over and turn off the light switch and Ziggy Stardust slowly grinds to a wavering halt. She was furious! :D

I had an Aunt that also built a Heathkit--a quadraphonic coffee table it was called. It had four speakers, turntable, and AM/FM. It looked really nice when she was finished. Her hands and the rest of her body were very crippled with arthritis, so the kit was something she could do in relatively one location, but it took a lot of patience. For someone who didn't know a thing about electronics, it was a huge endeavor, but turned out very nice.

I think there is an online place that still sells kit electronics, but I'm not sure the projects are as detailed as Heathkit's were.

Building these kits was not an easy task. I found the Heathkit Shortwave receivers very difficult to build. Of course I was never a technical individual. One nice thing about the old kit rigs is the quality was very good !

A shortwave receiver sounds challenging. I built a small transistor radio from a kit. It wasn't a Heathkit but was an interesting project. I think it almost worked the first time I powered it on. Almost. :) I also remember building a small electric motor from a Radio Shack kit. That was kind of cool a project.
