From the New York Post,
here's an article about some of the current karaoke hotspots.
One of the venues mentioned CHARGES $1 or more per song if you want to sing!
NEVER go by a NY Newspaer article.... These reporters know absolutely NOTHING about Karaoke, and they just write about teh 1st place they may stumble upon. Most of the articles I've read (over the years) that talk about Karaoke, mention the private clubs that charge by the hour, or the places that charge per song.
As for the mention of Wicked Willies (in the Village), I've never been there, so I can't judge them, but Winnie's (in Chinatown) has no rhyme or reason to how they operate their show. They take $1 per song, and then call you up at randomn. They don't even tell you who's up next. They just cue the song and play it, then call your name, and you have to run up to the stage. And, with so many places that don't charge you to sing, WHY would you want to go to a place like that???!!!
