It does not take "abuse" to wear out a cheap mic. Nearly everything has an expected working lifespan. If you only expect to run mics 30-40 hours a year, then a cheap mic may last you years. But if you are running one or more shows a week and hundreds of hours of use a year, the cheap mics will wear out.

Just feel the weight difference between a SM58 and some of the discount mics you can buy. The SM58 can weigh 2 times as much or more, and that is because the parts are more solidly built.

Exactly! Nearly impossible to harm an SM58 - might dent the windscreen but that's about it. Again been using the same 3 SM58's 7 nights a week since 94 and all sound the same as new & they've been abused thorughout the years (mostly accidents but a few on purpose (86'd people) and still work great.

Just to make this all sooooo much more fun..................... I spoke with our previous Karaoke host and last night he loaned me 1 of his sm58's, I used it along with a $9.00 First Act microphone bought at WallyWorld, (both corded btw) as I stated before we have a woman here that can SING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! asked her to try both, she said personally she could tell a diff, but no one in our crowd noticed............. and even funnier, both mic's being there, our singers grabbed the cheapo $9.00 one time and again, said they liked the way it "felt" in their hands (I know, I know, THATS an entirely new thread subject!!!)............. so again, in my Opinion, It's the Fun you have, not the equipment you're using................ unless you are a Pro that host's major events and have many talented singers.................................... So, to each their own. Peace, S.

Keep in mind that the mic is only once piece of the entire audio chain. I don't know anything about your rig (and don't take this the wrong way), but a $1000 mic and a $5 mic are going to sound much the same on a bargain basement PA.

Kinda like putting racing tires on your Yugo. It isn't going to handle any better. :-P

O'kay, our current system here(and get ready to laugh and Gasp in disbelief!!!)

Brand New CAVS 105G, currently using cd's but transferring to External hard Drive, run 1 video out to a 15 yr old 10" color TV, another video out to an 8 yr old 50" bar TV, sound goes out through a 6 year old Sony Surround Sound System with the stock 5 speaker Sony package from that time, 2 Large and 3 Small, set up in "surround sound" configuration, plus 1 powered Sony sub-woofer that came with the set(I told ya'll at the beginning that I started on a shoestring) I run 1 CAVS Mic(free with player) and 1 First Act mic bought for $9.00.............. I also purchased, personally, CAVS 1-4 plus an additional set for a total of 3127 no repeat songs(other than various artist styles of course) No where near professional or Quality, but it get's the job done, as I've said, this is ALL for Fun...............

I am however transferring everything to digital so here's my next step on that:

ioSafe Solo - 1.5 TB Fireproof/Waterproof External Hard
Dell Laptop purchsed for Karaoke, set up by Pro KJ friend from Vegas
Peavey MAX 112 Bass Combo Amplifier Amp Woofer 12"
Mackie 402 VLZ3 4 Channel Mixer 402VLZ3 Pro 3 VLZ
1 pair of Mackie 450s
2 Shure SM58's (I have listened)
There are programs such as KJPro and others that I will be trying before buying along the way as well(per almost everyones recommendation)

Since I'm new to this I've been picking the brains of anyone I can for info in case I decide to Step Up to you guy's level, these things were recommended by 2 KJ's I know, one that previously worked here, so I'm taking their word on it, not planning on running out and buying anything though (except the Hard Drive, already got it, was too good a deal), and I did post another thread in order to get Quality and a Variety of info so I can always change my mind before doing anything else....................... So go for it, let me hear it folks...................

Ooooops, almost forgot.............. for me it's Used Tires on a Harley......................

OK, first the Shure SM58. Yes, I agree that they are workhorses as far as their durability is concerned. Sound quality is another story. While they do sound good, there are so many microphones that sound better. So, let's get rid of the notion that the SM58's are the best because they're not.

I've used them. But my preferred microphone(s) is Digital Reference by Audio Technica. In my opinion, they offer a full, natural, detailed, crystal clear sound, WITHOUT using any kind of eq. They do a great job at noise rejection. I would take them over the SM58's any day, and I do. I have them in both wired and wireless versions and they are awesome.

I also have 3 Behringer XM8500 microphones. Let's talk about them for a minute. First of all, they are heavy. They are very solid feeling and do a good job at noise rejection. They sound very good. In fact, for the money, they sound really good. They have a nice full sound.

I never did the test that diafel did comparing the Behringer to the Shure but I did do a test using the Digital Reference and the SM58 and guess what??? All my singers went for and prefered the sound of the Digital Reference. So once again, it's not about the big name brand which seems to be a thing around here. If it's not a big expensive big name brand it can't be good. Well, I beg to differ and so does my audience.

I don't think anyone ever made that claim. I think most agreed that they are nearly indestructable while at the same time sounding good and won't break the bank making it more a good investment.

The "Swiss Army Knife" of microphones someone said recently. Not the finest, german blade, but solid and handy to have!

To me it comes down to both quality and total cost of ownership. For every time I see a DR, Sennheiser, Samson that is new I see one that is beat up. They look *terrible*, and I would never want to put something like that up on my stage.

The SM58 sounds pretty darn good -- remember, this is a mic used by top acts -- but the biggest advantage of it is durability. And a biggie for me -- the windscreen is available for $5.00. That allows me to keep a good-looking mic up there, not some beat-up piece of crap. Also, the cardioid pattern is great for karaoke, tolerating amateurish mic technique well compared to a supercardioid.
