sometimes management doesn't want to be the BAD GUYS ( same goes with the wait staff who work on tips)
My approach would have been to try and talk to them calmly and if that didn't work
The next time they sounded off I would get on the microphone and make them look as stupid as they sound while keeping my composure the entire time.
You have to learn how to deal with hecklers and the like.
At any time things get physical you have to defend yourself at all costs and never ever take being insulted by anyone! just my $.02

Having been a bar owner and had BIG louts in.
What does the owner do.?
Call 911 and be known as a problem bar.
Couldn't sort them out myself.
I would have been Dog Food.
You all expect the owner to take control which is fair.
Not always practical.
They can not always commandeer heavies.
Sometimes they are scared of dying.
Do you really blame them?
Sometimes things do get out of hand.
My name is not John Wayne.

Around here, it's the LAW that they DO take control when there's a problem.
It's all part and parcel of owning a bar.
If the owner has a problem controlling his patrons, then he may need to start hiring bouncers. Otherwise, he risks losing his liquor license and his business goes bye-bye.

That is exactly what I mean.
The general public don't have a clue what is involved running a bar.

I know _I_ don't! My people skills aren't that good. I try to be nice and pleasant to everyone, but I do have a bit of a temper (which seems to have mellowed out as I grow older). I'll just leave running the bars to you guys who know what the heck you're doing.

I think a lot of it depends on how trashed the guy is too. Most of the people I see causing the real trouble have had a lot more than one too many drinks. It can get very ugly, but I still view cutting drunks off as the bar's responsibility.

I don't think that's even at issue. What most folks don't know is how difficult it is to walk that fine line. A lot of owners don't either and they're the bars that go out of business. Keep a straight, no tolerance line for some behavior with a margin for others and tread that margin carefully.
Managing that ebb and flow is a tough thing to do. I'm glad it's not my responsibility.

In our area, they do have to do that, otherwise the cops target the bar and its patrons for extra attention. That can kill a bar's business.
