Sure you need to consider it, because it is an aspect of that microphone. That said, how much weight are you going to put on it, probably very little for most people. I wouldn't be worried about it if it were for my home kit.

While not "Official Sennheiser", if you check ebay you can find clone windscreens for the 835 for $4.00 a pair. While the shipping charge of 12.84 (air from Hong Kong) jacks up the over all cost to 17.00, the per screen cost of 8.50 each puts the screen replacement in about the same ballpark as the Shures.

Early on, I did buy some real cheap mics.. Bad handling noise..

However, I got past the $7.00 to $10.00 mics, and no worries..

Guitar Center has foam wind screens real cheap..

Not sure how much these were they were given to me in trade. One is a Crate microphone and the other is a V-tech. They both have a nice feel/weight but don't seem to be any kind of quality.

I think the SM58 would work great and be much better than the PG58. On a sidenote, the first company I worked for used the PG's and I can't tell you how many times the singers would look at me like I was an idiot when their mic wasn't on only to find out that the switch was in the off position. I wound up taping the switches in the on position. Then it was really annoying, now it's kinda funny.

been using Sennheisers for about 5 years and after dozens of drops, and thrown at a cheeting boyfriend at one show still have nothing more than one or two tiny dents on the the grills. and agree on better sound (as subjective as that is) if you havent tried any of them, Guitar Center or any music shop should let you try all 3 of them and you decide. close, far, cupped, switching hands, try it all. it's been stated a bunch of times, your ears are best for finding what works for your situation.

Your ears and you ARE allowed to adjust the dials on your mixer if you have one which can totally change the vocal sound out as well.

I keep hearing you guys talk about how bulletproof the SM58 is, but I gotta tell you.. i've seen plenty of dead SM58's in music store junk bins.

I've picked up many road used SM58's and sung into them and the capsules were just absolutely shot.

Now don't get me wrong.. I love the SM58 as a general purpose knock around mic, and I agree, it's head and shoulders better than the PG58.. but it isn't exactly the lifetime mic many like to describe it as.

There's a reason Shure sells replacement capsules for those mics.. and it's not because they last 30 or 40 years.

If you can buy a dead SM58 cheap, you should. Shure will refurb it for $56, essentially giving you a brand new one. Buyer beware though...it's also one of the most faked mics ever made which might explain why they are in the junk bin.

About to send Shure 3 mics for replacement as we speak. Not that they are not working, but after 18 years of service the barrel that holds the XLR cable is so worn that it doesn't lock the cable in place anymore.

I'll challenge anyone to find me a more durable mic than the SM58. In relative terms, its about as close as you get to indestructable.

Just a question ..over the years has the design of the SM58 changed ?
ANy improvements or changes in materials or production ?

Some very minor changes but that's really about it. As with any microphone manufacturer, if they were going to change the design, they'd make a different model. That's another testament to the quality and popularity of the SM58, the fact that they've been making it for over 30 years and people still buy it in droves.
