I know many people like to sing "Turn the Page", but I have heard it so many times now I actually get sick to my stomach when I hear it. I cope by going out for a smoke.

Ahhhh yes, the one benefit of being a smoker. 8)
I also head outside for a smoke during "those" songs as well.

Big Jer, we're with you. We have all sorts of wigs, masks, props, etc. to bring out when necessary. I'm still trying to figure out how to bring in an iceberg for that Titanic song. Maybe have to settle for a life jacket.

Hey--start the thread--I'll play.

Don't think I have ever attended or had a show where there wasn't at least 1 to 3 Elvi.

Only 3 Elviss? here is one where there are 5, and I have a photo somewhere when there were 8 of them....

That's definitely a Nevada condition....

That includes where we were in California. And oddly enough, most of the professional "wedding type" Elvi are in Las Vegas. Supposedly it is harder to book one in the Reno area.

All those Elvis pics, Whoa Momma.

I've always wanted to try Turn the Page, but because it is so overdone I do consider it to be taboo.

But now I'm slighty encouraged to show up one night and try it for ya Babs. Maybe Halloween so you don't know it's me

There are no BAD karaoke songs.... Just that there are many songs that get sung POORLY every time they are sung ... PBTDBL - American Pie - Pictures - Friends in Low places ... Like many said ..you learn to hate these songs when done POORLY

But then again.... When some one sings one of these "tired" songs and really nails it ...That's special ! :)

Tequila? Are you kidding? :o

That's the absolute best for karaoke virgins. It's the karaoke equivalent to training wheels.

Other than for that purpose though it's worthless.

Really? I have only had 1 Elvis in all I can remember probably around 95. I think I only have two Elvis songs even sung anymore - Rubberneckin (Paul Oakenfeld remix) & Can't Help Falling In Love - both by a 25 YO.
Need You Now - Lady Antabellum is QUICKLY becoming one song I wished never came out!

I agree no song is really taboo at karaoke. It is all for fun and if the singer is enjoying themselves more power to them. Unfortunately for me "Turn the Page" has been over done. It is actually a nice song. Just because I'm tired of hearing it though doesn't mean a patron shouldn't do it. :D

"Turn the Page" still gets a good response from the audience. I think it has become ritualized sort of like "Free Bird." People hear the first notes and go, "All right!" You don't suppose there is an Elvis version?

American Pie, great song but I wouldn't want to hear it more than maybe once every few months

Picture, good song but time for it to Vaya Con Dios for awhile

PBTDL, one of my least favorites, by the time they are at 1rst base I'm wishing it were the 7th inning stretch

Celine & Whitney, I like some of Celine, & Whitney is ok if the singer isn't being too diva-ish

Don't Stop Believing, rarely hear it

Sweet Caroline, great song, a bit oversung

Total Eclipse, ", " " "

Janis Joplin, there are a lot of singers that don't know what a harpoon is and have never worn a dirty red bandana, let alone a clean one, who try this song and then think they have sung it better than Janis but I suspect no one has

Frank Sinatra, there are so many great Sinatra songs, why do we always only just get to hear That's Life and My Way?

Elvis, I like hearing Blue Suede Shoes, Fool Such as I, and Love Me

Patsy Cline, I'll go crazy if I hear that song again

Marvin, a little overdone but nice to hear sometimes

Edmund Fitzgerald, I've only heard it a few times in karaoke

Love Shack, good song but a few times a year is good enough (I learned to drive in a Chrysler Town & Country station wagon that was as big as a whale, so I like the lyrics)

Friends in Low Places, an awesome song with great melody and lyrics, but can be oversung

Turn the Page, great song but don't want to hear it every week

Hotel California, seems to be mostly sung by girls, less often by guys?

Crazy On You, I'd say the singer at Karen's show gave it a good effort (and it got better as the song progressed)--that's a tough song! My favorite heart song is Dreamboat Annie

Freebird, I've sung it a few times but kind of avoid it because of the long outro, I don't think it's over sung though, maybe it is in Alabama. There was a guy in my 8th grade class that wanted Freebird to be in our graduation ceremony.

That said, I have to remember what it was like when I first started singing karaoke. I'm sure I sang a lot of songs that people had heard many times before and I unwittingly thought I was giving the bar "fresh material". Part of karaoke IMHO is learning to be patient as a listener. You only get to sing a few times. The rest of the night you hear songs you like, good singers, singers who aren't as accomplished, and also you hear songs that have been oversung. The skilled KJ can try and direct singers to new material, which I think is good, but there will always be the karaoke standards that get sung a lot. Patience is a virtue!
